49er Spirit!—Gary P. Gilroy. Composed for
young musicians in their first years of learning, this is
a musical salute to the many pioneers who ventured
west in search of gold and good fortune. The
spirited music reflects the exuberance and sense of
optimism these settlers felt as they set out in pursuit
of a new and better life. Percussionists help re-
create the setting with sounds of trotting horses and
the pickax against the California rocks and soil.
