H Moanin'—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew Homzy.
Here's a playable yet very effective arrangement
of this signature Mingus composition. The familiar
baritone sax riff is handled by three saxes, and there
is also a substantial soli for the entire saxophone
section. Optional parts are included for flute,
clarinet and French horn. A terrific introduction to
the genius of Mingus!

H Out of the Doghouse—Erik Morales. Arranger/
composer Erik Morales delivers! This outstanding
shuffle chart sounds like a big old freight train
coming down the tracks, and it just builds and
builds! There's a wonderful section after the optional
solos that features a powerful sax soli without the
rhythm section, and there are great breaks for
piano and drums throughout. There are also some
independent bari sax lines and optional written
solos for alto, tenor and guitar. The lead trumpet
range is to written A above the staff and there's an
optional ending with lead trumpet notes up to C.
This is a hot chart! Our highest recommendation!
Optional expanded instrumentation.

l Reunion Blues—Milt Jackson/arr. Rick Stitzel.
Reunion Blues is the title track from the famous
1971 album featuring Milt Jackson and Oscar
Peterson, but over the years it has been recorded
by countless jazz artists. Set in a moderate straight-
eighth groove, this riff-based blues tune is perfect
for younger players. The saxes are featured the first
time through with answers provided by the brass.
The written solo section can be performed either
as a trumpet section or by a single player. An easy
ensemble tutti rounds things out in this attractive
and well-written chart. Playable with optional
reduced or expanded instrumentations, this chart
is first-class all the way!

H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/trans. Mike Lewis.
Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable swing
tune of all time! This incredible transcription is as
close as you're going to come to the original (which
included clarinet and less than a full compliment
of brass). This chart is scored for a standard 5
saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm, but
aside from that, it is the original as played by Benny
Goodman. Every lick is there, including all the Gene
Krupa drum breaks! This chart is a must for every
big band's library!

l So What (Little Big Band)—Miles Davis/arr.
Michael Philip Mossman. Here is the Miles Davis
jazz standard skillfully and uniquely arranged for
six horns and rhythm section. On the head, the
saxes take the signature melody line answered
by the brass. The open solo section features
tasty background figures, followed by a tutti
ensemble section before returning to the head.
Instrumentation: six horns (ATB saxes, two
trumpets, one trombone) plus four rhythm with
optional additional parts for alto, tenor and
trombone. Don't miss this chart on the iconic Miles
Davis standard!

4 Struttin' with Some Barbecue—arr. Rick
Stitzel. Here's a fresh take on one of the all-time
standards of early jazz composed by Lillian Hardin
Armstrong and Don Raye, and made famous by
Louis Armstrong. It's an easy swinger with the
wonderful melodic line featured by the trumpets
at first, then the saxes. The written or improvised
solo space is for trumpet featuring appealing
backgrounds. There's a hint of old time jazz style
mixed in with a more traditional straight-ahead
swing feel. Playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations, this is a great way to
introduce a bit of jazz history with a chart that's
also fun to play. What a loveable tune!

H Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Vince
Gassi. This chart swings all the way and is very
playable by a young jazz ensemble. Arranger
Vince Gassi offers a fresh take on this classic, yet
captures the essence of this well-known Strayhorn
composition made famous by Ellington. It's scored
exactly right for younger players... not too difficult
but with fun-to-play parts. With brief written solos
for 1st alto sax and 1st trumpet, and easy ranges,
it also has plenty of dynamics to teach. A superb
chart you will play for years to come! Optional
reduced or expanded instrumentation.

l That's It!—Benjamin Bela Jaffe/arr. Paul Murtha.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to
stay active with exciting new recordings and
performances in the style of traditional New
Orleans jazz. This up-tempo tune from their
latest album features a hot minor groove with
a contemporary edge. A flexible solo section
provides written or ad lib options for alto sax,
trumpet, or trombone. This chart delivers
performance results with confidence!

4 Things Ain't What They Used to Be—Mercer
Ellington/arr. Alan Baylock. Mercer Ellington's
classic blues shuffle gets the Baylock treatment!
The style is down home and the solos are for
alto, trumpet, trombone, and tenor sax. Also
included is a powerful Baylock-style shout
chorus and optional parts for expanded instru-
mentations. It's a fun chart and it gets our highest
recommendation!

4 Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Erik Morales.
Wow! If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his
iconic jazz standard, he would be pleased! The
first statement stays very close to the original,
which is a good thing. The solos are for written
or improvised alto and trumpet, and the solo
backgrounds are simply wonderful. This swinger
plays well at about 176 bmp, has excellent full-
ensemble passages, a bari sax and rhythm section
break before the last chorus, an exciting shout
chorus, and great development. This chart has it
all! Our highest recommendation!
