The title refers to the
ongoing quest in which we all embark when trying to
find our place in the world, and the music takes us
on a journey of varied moods and styles. The stark
and dramatic opening unison statements introduce
a lighthearted and spirited 12/8 section that bubbles
with rhythmic vitality. Beautifully paired with a lyric
middle section that builds to an emotional climax,
the fast 12/8 section returns for an exciting and
energized finish.

were based on a folk song that is commonly referred
to as Cherokee Morning Song. This expressive

Promise of a New Sunrise—David Shaffer.
With a glorious new sunrise soon to be born,
this spectacular festival piece blossoms with all
the brilliance of a new sunlit day. A broad and
powerful fanfare-like opening quickly subsides
into a simple lonely trumpet melody. As the phrase
builds, woodwinds and brass are added, providing
active countermelodies and beautiful harmonic
progressions. The conclusion restates the original
melody in rhythmic half time with percussion fueling
the energy for a dramatic finish.
