The Armed Man (Movement 1 from
"The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace")—

This noted
Welsh composer dedicated his landmark Mass
to the victims of the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo,
and more recently it's been associated with
remembrances of 9/11. The French Renaissance
song L'Homme Arme serves as the basis for this
movement, beautifully adapted here for standard
concert band instrumentation. With its relentless
pulse and haunting strains, this is a dramatically
emotional and riveting work.

Evening Song (Abenlied)—
Josef Rheinberger/arr. Shelley Hanson.
Written in 1873, this is one of the best-known
choral works of composer, organist and teacher
Josef Rheinberger. Displaying an exceptional lyric

Fantasia on Bogoroditse Devo—
arr. Frederick Speck.
Inspired by the beautiful
choral original, the chant-like gracefulness of the
melodic source serves as the musical cornerstone.
The music unfolds from a quiet opening, inviting the
listener into a distant, reserved first statement of the
main melody. The work then develops as a broad
arch, becoming increasingly vivid until an exuberant
arrival and release by the full ensemble. A very nice
setting for mature bands.

Feuerfest—Josef Strauss/arr. Carl Strommen.
This transcription has the distinctive Austrian flare
of the original, much like that of famous marches
like Radetzky March, but is much more playable
for young bands. This nice little march will be a
distinctive addition for festival performances and will
be a refreshing change from the standard American
march fare.

The Fox—Bela Bartok/arr. Paul Cook.
One of the numerous short piano pieces for children
that Bela Bartok completed in a piano collection in
1909. This arrangement is well suited for early band
students - it remains faithful to Bartok's intent while
accommodating the skills of first-year players. Light
