If a pipe player is not available, this part is cued in multiple band parts or you can use a synthesizer with bagpipe patch. A lyric, very romantic song that's reminiscent of the expressive music of Puccini and Verdi. It's a brief, solemn work, perfect for teaching students to play in an emotional legato style, and is an excellent choice for a moment of touching repose on your next concert. It fits so well with concert band instrumentation that it always sounds great, and this piece is no exception. Starting with a solo clarinet playing a lively jig, it blossoms into a dramatic presentation of the folk song before relaxing into a section of repose based on the song Binnorie. Alfred Reed's setting for concert band is available here with a full score and thoroughly edited parts. This composition is an episodic work that paints a musical portrait of a beautiful mountain landscape.
