Erebus and Terror: The Lost Ships—
Victor Lopez.
Images of excitement, bravery and
sorrow depict the search for the Northwest Passage.
The anticipation of the start is heard with a rousing
melodic theme which then ebbs as the gravity of
their journey sinks in, but courage is again renewed
as the trumpets tell the story. The tragic crash of
the ships ends the piece with strong chromatic
dissonances. The journey is over, but not the story
of these brave explorers.

sea village on North Carolina's Outer Banks, but now

Reflections from the Wall—David Shaffer.
This commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the
end of the Vietnam War was inspired by a visit to
the Vietnam War Memorial and the power of this
spectacular monument. Opening with a simple
depiction of a cloud-covered morning, it broadens
into a dramatic and powerful presentation as
the sun triumphantly breaks through the clouds.
Emotion, reflection and a sincere thanks to those
who served are the driving musical elements of
this powerful piece.

Shrine of the Fallen—Brian Balmages.
Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in
2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk
song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for
many protestors as a symbol of national pride while
also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer
as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music
is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of
the Ukrainian national anthem add to the intensity
of the music, which features the instrumentalists
singing in four-part harmony at the very end of the
piece. Absolutely stunning!

The Tears of Arizona—Brian Balmages.
Commissioned to commemorate the 75th
anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the music
begins very solemnly, referring to the "tears" of oil
that continue to be shed daily by the sunken ship.
The section The Pride of Arizona moves past the
tears and to the pride of the crew members and the
feeling of the "spirit of aloha." Percussion loosely
imitates the groove of a luau, yet is juxtaposed
with moments of pause and reflection. The final
statement feels incomplete, reminding the audience
that the tears have not stopped flowing. Magical!

The Cumberland's Crew was inspired by the
historic naval battle between the wooden U.S.S.
Cumberland and the ironclad C.S.S. Virginia in 1862.
The light and airy melody in 3/4 time is treated to
a variety of textures and voicings as it builds to a
dramatic conclusion. This work for developing bands
shows how music can tell a story and provides an
opportunity for cross-curricular teaching.
