t Soon I Will Be Donearr. Stacey V. Gibbs.
Premiered at the ACDA National Convention
2015, this piece marks the first double choir
arrangement for a spiritual. In a few short years
Stacy Gibbs has earned the reputation as the
most sought-after arranger of spirituals in the
U.S. Stacey's writing is always a pleasure to
sing but this one is special, with the antiphonal
choirs playing off one another and wailing sounds
building a climactic finish. The arrangement is
superb and well worth the time. Your audiences
will love it!

l Steal Awayarr. Gwyneth Walker. Steal Away
interprets the traditional spiritual Steal Away
to Jesus as a song of alternating sorrow and
strength. The refrains are presented quietly and
mournfully: "Steal away to Jesus. I ain't got long
to stay here." In contrast, the verses are sung
with conviction: "My Lord calls me, calls me
by the thunder." Similarly, the accompaniment
varies from florid arpeggiations (for the refrains)
to rhythmic chordal entrances (for the verses).
Of special interest is the use of scale patterns.
In the opening refrain, and on every occurrence
of the words "steal away," the scales descend,
marked as falling tears, or stealing away. At the
conclusion of the song, the scales rise, as the
soul ascending to heaven. "My Lord calls me,
calls me home."

been wounded; aching heart, full of pain, still I rise,
yes, still I rise..." With its spiritual-like style, this
original song for SSAA with solo speaks poignantly
of the struggles of African-American women.

attracting a lot of attention.

H True LightKeith Hampton. Opening phrases
of the traditional spiritual This Little Light of Mine
launch this exciting work into Keith Hampton's
original words and music, which feature a sixteen-
measure soprano solo sung to lines from tenth-
century poet Grigor Narekatzi's Book of Mournful
Chants: "Don't let the light that You've given me
die, And don't desert my mind. But let the one
who serves You Praise You again and again." The
repeated responses "He lives in us as True Light"
and "God gave the world True Light" give solid

Here is a radical modernization of a traditional
American spiritual, combining shape-note singing,
ancient Latin chant, and elements of dub step
music. Choirs are encouraged to sing with the
early-American aesthetic of vocal tone using a lack
of affectation in the voice. Two possible endings -
one quiet and one strong - make this appropriate
for a variety of programs. A truly unique setting!
