Three Contemporary Latin SettingsJerry
Estes. This special set of three short pieces is
great for captivating and motivating developing
choirs; it is now available for SATB choirs as
well. The easy, repeated Latin phrases come to
life with fresh musical ideas. The Kyrie, with its
staccato versus legato singing, contrasts with the
simple, melodic ballad feel of the Adoramus Te,
which in turn is contrasted with the celebratory
style and energy of the Gloria in Excelsis Deo.
For school or church, sung independently or as
a set, for holiday use or at any time of year, this
is a powerhouse for teaching and performing!
Highly recommended!

H Fantasia on Christmas CarolsRalph Vaughan
Williams. A "Fantasia" in the truest sense, this
choral tapestry of English carols was composed
in 1912 after Vaughan-Williams had completed
the scores for his first symphony ("The Sea"),
and the Tallis Fantasia. In this relatively short
work for Baritone soloist, chorus and orchestra,
we find the essence of Vaughan-Williams style
and compositional mastery - hallmarks of a richly
productive artistic output that defined a nationalist
movement in music that continues to this day.
Centered on four traditional carols: The Truth Sent
From Above; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen; On
Christmas Night; and There Is A Fountain; it also
features fragments of other well-known carol tunes.

t Patapanarr. David Conte. This charming a
cappella setting of the familiar carol has a bright,
rhythmic ostinato pattern that moves between
the sections of the choir. The Christmas story is
told from the perspective of shepherds playing
simple instruments - flutes and drums - the
onomatopoetic sound of which gives the carol its
name. "Pat-a-pan" is meant to mimic the sound
of the drum, and an accompanying lyric, "tu-re-
lu-re-lu," the flute.

MESSIAH:
UNDERSTANDING
AND PERFORMING
HANDEL'S
MASTERPIECE
Helmuth Rilling. This book
on Handel's "Messiah" reflects
Helmuth Rilling's remarkable
skills, both as a conductor and
as an educator. It is literally a
"study guide" for conductors and
performers which shows the step-
by-step thought process Rilling
uses in preparing a score - a
methodology which can be
applied to any work. More
importantly, Rilling challenges
the reader to probe Handel's
thinking - to consider ways of more
effectively communicating the
deeper layers of meaning found
within this masterwork.

QUATRE MOTETS
POUR LE TEMPS
DE NOEL
Francis Poulenc. Quatre motets
pour le temps de Noel was
completed in 1952. Following the
narrative of the Nativity, Poulenc
intended that the movements be
performed together, although
they have often been performed
separately. O magnum mysterium
is a responsorial chant traditionally
recanted during the Christmas
Matins, the monastic nighttime
liturgy that ends at dawn. Quem
vidistis pastores dicite recalls the
message given to the shepherds
of the Savior's birth. The text of
Videntes stellam, a responsory
for the Christmas Matins, paints a
picture of the star in the sky that
leads the Magi to Christ. Hodie
Christus natus est is an Antiphon to
the Magnificat, which is sung during
the vespers on Christmas Day. The
text speaks of the world rejoicing
over the birth of Christ.
