Sacred Concert All Voicings medium-advanced
l Fecit PotentiamKim André Arnesen. This
exciting mixed-meter piece is excerpted from
Kim André Arnesen's "Magnificat." The composer
has the voices in unison, two parts and four parts

artistically grounded. Challenge your choir today
with this energetic composition.

lt For He Shall Give His Angels Charge over Thee
Felix Mendelssohn/arr. Patrick Russill. Written
in 1844 in thanksgiving for the preservation of the
life of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm after an
unsuccessful assassination attempt, this is the
original a cappella version of the well-known chorus
from Elijah. This edition presents both English and
German texts.

lt Gaudeamus OmnesMarek Raczynski. Based
on a Gregorian chant by the same name, this
a cappella work explores the ideas of human joy
and angelic singing. Beginning softly, the composer
builds texture and sound, moving toward the final
climax of "Alleluia!" An angelic-sounding piece for
better choirs.

n GloriaOla Gjeilo. This jubilant work is a fabulous
festival selection for better women's choirs!
Performed with four-hand piano accompaniment
or with small orchestra, it spans a wide range of
expression, from the ethereal Gloria in excelsis Deo
opening to the thrilling, exuberant Amen.

t I Thank You God for Most This Amazing Day
(2009 Edition)Eric Whitacre. The richness of
nature and the miracle of each newborn day are
the inspiration for this well-known poem by e. e.
cummings. Eric Whitacre's setting is similarly rich
in vocal color and texture, and displays a sense
of wonder within the context of post-modern
compositional style. This 2009 edition follows
the composer's original intent for this widely
acclaimed work.

4t The LambKim André Arnesen. The beloved
poem by William Blake is here expressed with
great sensitivity through music. The composer
takes us to a dramatic climax in the penultimate
phrase, and then concludes with a tender ending,
"God bless thee." A very special work for better
a cappella choirs.

t My Flight for HeavenBlake R. Henson. This
exceptional work for accomplished a cappella
choirs takes Robert Herrick's text about seeking
comfort in the welcome embrace of death and
shifts the point of view to invoke music which
strives toward a new life without pain, suffering,
war, or famine. A deeply moving work which treats
this profound text as a metaphor for life. "Fall on
me like a silent dew, or like those maiden showers,
which, by the peep of day, do strew a baptism o'er
the flowers..."

Chimes: 1. Soul Rejoicing—Valery Gavrilin. Soul Rejoicing opens with
the stormy image of a band of horsemen riding fiercely in the darkness of a
moonless night. Thus, with the sounds of pounding hooves and riders' shouts,
begins Perezvony (Chimes), Valery Gavrilin's monumental multi-movement
composition subtitled On Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play - Choral Symphony,
scored for mixed chorus, narrator, percussion and solo oboe. Emotionally
charged and rhythmically driven from the start, this movement continues to build
with excitement and tension through Gavrilin's brilliant use of choral texture,
dynamics, and extended melodic lines. The text (in Russian), written in the style
of Russian folklore by the composer himself, doesn't tell a story per se, rather
it provides textual colors and strong images through many tongue-twisting,
onomatopoeic word combinations. (Russian pronunciation guide is available from
the publisher's website.)

Chimes: 2. The Death of a Robber—Valery Gavrilin. The tenor solo and
narrator are pivotal in this dark, story-telling second movement of Chimes, while
the chorus repeatedly responds with tolling bells and ticking clocks.

Chimes: 3. White, White Snow—Valery Gavrilin. The lamenting narrative
about all that "can't" be during the winter is enhanced by tenor solo and varied
choral textures in this plaintive movement.

Chimes: 4. Rubbish—Valery Gavrilin. Playful and rhythmic, the nonsensical
and happy-go-lucky narrative of this fourth movement of Chimes is enhanced by
onomatopoeic text and thick chordal texture.

Chimes: 5. Ti-Ri-Ri—Valery Gavrilin. Ti-Ri-Ri, the wordless fifth movement
of Gavrilin's Choral Symphony, paints a colorful and theatrical scene. One can
almost see young men and women gathering (for a dance, perhaps) and as the
voices enter one by one, the listener hears a different character from each vocal
part. A musical drama ensues, but the scene ends peacefully with the basses
singing their jaunty, sturdy ostinato. (Russian pronunciation guide is available
from the publisher's website.)

Chimes: 7. Sunset Music—Valery Gavrilin. In this seventh movement of
Gavrilin's Choral Symphony, a solo oboe introduces a dreamy, richly textured
expression of the approaching end of a man's - or a nation's - journey of
enlightenment and spirituality.
