This classical work by a younger brother of Joseph Haydn features brilliant
melismatic lines and a well-crafted piano reduction of the original orchestral
score. An opening triadic motive in the sopranos is repeated and developed
through the lower voices in imitative fashion before coming to a homophonic
section and a stately close. The arranger has done an excellent job making this
accessible to school choirs! Excellent editor's notes give thorough historical
background on the composer and his work.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox's poem suggests that the bird of hope not soar too high or
sing too loud. Taking heed, the composer created much downward movement
in the piano accompaniment, while allowing the singers to take some risks,
both high and somewhat loud. This charming piece offers great melodic
interest in the vocal lines. Exquisite in text and music, it is a work of depth and
great rewards for better women's choirs at the high school or collegiate level.
