The Cannonball RunGordon Goodwin. Here's
the full big-band version of Gordon Goodwin's
The Cannonball Run! It's a high-energy Latin/pop
cooker that moves along at a pretty good clip,
around 240 bpm. The saxophone lead is soprano
instead of alto, the lead trumpet range is written to
high F, and there's solo space for all saxes, trumpet
4, and trombones 1 and 2. A hot sax section soli
and some counterpoint round out this cannonball.
Very hot stuff!

This jazz fusion classic by Chick Corea was
recorded by Stan Getz in 1972 and also by

the landmark album Light as a Feather. In this
exciting version for mature jazz ensembles, Mike
Tomaro retains the highly energetic samba feel of
the original while adding some creative touches
of his own. Solos for trumpet and alto saxophone
are featured.

l Ciudad de Oro (City of Gold)Bob Washut.
Ciudad de Oro is a Latin/jazz original based on a
funky type of timba, a recent Cuban rhythmic style
based on a 3:2 clave. It's an exciting composition
that includes active parts for all players, varied
textual ensembles, and an open solo section with
solo sheets and chord changes included. This

Cuban OvertureGeorge Gershwin/arr. Chris
Sharp. A serious work adapted from the symphonic
poem composed by George Gershwin, arranger
Chris Sharp has accepted the challenge to create
this amazing arrangement for big band. This chart is
a primarily a bright samba but it has a slow middle
section which reverts to the fiery samba groove. The
written or improvised solo space is for alto 1 and
trumpet 2 and the lead trumpet range is to D above
the staff. A percussion part is included as well. This
is a brilliant arrangement and will certainly be a high
point in any concert or festival performance.

Cubauza!Michael Philip Mossman. This exciting
Afro-Cuban composition is the opening cut from
the 1993 album 944 Columbus, the final recoding
by Mario Bauza, one of the most influential figures
in the development of Latin jazz. The title comes
from combining the words "Cuban" and "Bauza"
and features a bebop influence interpreted by the
Afro-Cuban rhythm section. This newly edited and
engraved edition is a "must have" for mature bands.

Eleanor RigbyLennon & McCartney/arr. Eric
Richards. Commissioned by the U.S. Army Jazz
Ambassadors, this Eric Richards chart shines new
light on the beauty and depth of this classic Beatles
hit. An up-tempo Brazilian groove gives way to hints
of samba and songo, but always with a smooth and
laid-back feel. A piano solo is featured off the top,
followed by a trio of tenor, trombone and guitar on
the head, and later solo space for one or more of
these players. A brief nod to the classical feel of the
original Beatles track helps build to a climatic shout
for the full ensemble. Nice!

4 Fiesta en la CalleMatt Amy. With a street
party atmosphere, here's a high-energy Latin chart
that fuses Tito Puente with Arturo Sandoval and
the modern writing of Gordon Goodwin. After the
rhythm section sets up a quasi-tumbao/salsa feel,
the saxophones support the piano montuno before
moving into the full band introduction. Additionally,
this chart features unison writing across the
ensemble in the melody line and supportive roles
within the sections and some high trumpet playing.
After a development section and solos from various
horn players, the chart moves to an open drum solo
before returning to restate the theme. Culminating
with a powerful and exciting ending, Fiesta en la
Calle is great for festivals, contests and concerts!

Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on
