n I Can't Stop Loving Youarr. Quincy Jones.
Every jazz fan knows it, loves it and has wished it
was in print! And now, this quintessential big-band
arrangement is finally available! As recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time
by Basie: Hits of the 50s & 60s, Quincy Jones'

your audiences to their feet. Beginning with the
Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle
chart features in-your-face ensemble writing at its

trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply
swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from
beginning to end! Never has a sad song sounded
so happy! Very highly recommended!

n I Left My Heart in San Franciscoarr. Quincy
Jones. Quincy Jones wrote some incredible
arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count
Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By
Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in
San Francisco features great interplay between the
ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with
written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm,
and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo
space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are very
moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of bands.

The Pink Panther (Little Big Band)Henry
Mancini/arr. Mike Tomaro. This timeless Mancini
classic gets a makeover inspired by the version
recorded by Bobby McFerrin. The groove is medium
swing with an occasional hint of rock thrown in. This

l Doodlin'—Horace Silver/arr. Ernie Wilkins. Horace Silver's iconic blues
received the big-band treatment courtesy of arranger Ernie Wilkins for Dizzy
Gillespie's big band in 1956. By and large, the arrangement remains fairly close
to Silver's original intentions, especially with the melodic statements. The style
is medium, down-home swing that begins with the full ensemble and then goes
right into a trumpet solo. The Gillespie band played this with a lot of humor, so
liberties can be taken with fun, interpretive quotes of the melody, including the
baritone sax lick leading into the phrases. What a great chart to hear and play!

Stablemates—Benny Golson. This big-band version of Golson's legendary
tune was written for the Dizzy Gillespie big band and used on one of their famous
State Department tours. It roars right off the top at about 190 bpm and soon
features solo trumpet with powerful band hits behind the soloist. Although written
to feature Gillespie in solo spots, it is not a trumpet feature throughout. The
trumpet solo is soon followed by a tenor solo, which in turn is followed by another
roaring full-ensemble section. The trumpet soloist is back in for a brief statement
before the finale. Exciting, powerful, and fun to hear and play, Stablemates is just
as viable today as it was in the 1950s!

Whisper Not—Benny Golson. Benny Golson's medium-slow swing chart
Whisper Not began life innocently enough as an arrangement for Dizzy Gillespie's
1956 State Department big band. Although it may not be as complicated as
some of Golson's other compositions, the disarming melody is underpinned
by some sneakily complex harmonies. The solo space is reserved for trumpet,
tenor and piano. Appropriately enough for the title, this arrangement begins at a
barely audible volume level with only occasional louder bursts until the brief shout
chorus. The famous "march time" segment occurs and the volume level tapers off
to a medium-soft level, followed by a dynamic crescendo to a dramatic ending.
