Although this programmatic work is set throughout in E minor, it contains three contrasting sections which visit 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8 time. The Lady of the Lake is the mysterious woman associated with the legend of King Arthur. In fact, she is the one who gives Arthur his famous sword, Excalibur. "Exotic Butterflies" is the translation of the title of this Latin- flavored selection. This lively piece was composed in the style of Mozart, although the composer's own personality does shine through. Everyone stays in first position (except the basses), and the dissonances are quite mild. Here's a very creative work in a simple ABA form that will show your orchestra in the best light. It begins with a driving rhythmic melody that generates a great deal of intensity. The haunting melody moves toward a glorious key change, and a brief passage for solo string quartet gives a captivating change of texture. It ends with a dramatic return to the opening material.
