experiments. e composer creates a musical exploration of

Big Ole was the legendary first settler of Minnesota. He was a
Norwegian Viking who came over on a ship and made a trek
to what is now Alexandria, Minnesota. A 25-foot statue of Big
Ole proudly stands in their town. is enchanting work pays
homage to Big Ole! It's rhythmic, lyrical, and simply fun for
players and audiences.

Lux Angelis—Stephen Chin.
is advanced string orchestra work may be played with
optional Grade 1 strings, Grade 2 strings, keyboard and
percussion. e notion of light pervading the universe is, in
the composer's opinion, both physical and personal. is is
represented to some extent by the use of suspended chords and
an abundance of harmonics. e piece concludes with what can
be imagined to be a chorus of angels bathed in heavenly light.

Master of Disguise—Brent D. Smith.
is original work is a tribute to the life of Monsignor Hugh
O'Flaherty, who played a significant role in saving the lives
of Jews and Allied prisoners during World War II. Due to his
ability to out-fox frequent traps laid by the Nazis, O'Flaherty
was nicknamed the "Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican."
Performers should swing the rhythm throughout the piece using
a traditional jazz-waltz style. e drum set and piano parts add
even more interest to the piece.

section balances the outer frenetic sections. It's a unique piece that
works equally well for winter and spring concerts.

is modern concert overture treats the listener and performer
to a myriad of styles and moods. e piece begins with a heavy,
ponderous theme which depicts the limestone quarries that first
earned Joliet the nickname "City of Stone" in the early 1800s.
With the construction of a steel mill in 1869, Joliet became
known as the "City of Steel." e two themes, "stone" and
"steel," are then further developed, and the piece culminates in a
majestic, celebratory final statement of the "steel" theme.

Urban Concerto Grosso—Brian Balmages.
is inventive and stunning composition is a modernized
version of the original concerto grosso dating back to the
Baroque era. Written for soloists on electric instruments, it is
also possible to do acoustically. An ideal way to feature guest
soloists, faculty members or talented students, the music
explores a wide range of styles, yet the orchestra parts are
not difficult to put together. At times, the piece sounds like
Stravinsky. At other times, with the use of distortion pedals,
the audience will feel like they are at a heavy metal concert.
Incredibly unique, and guaranteed to bring down the house!

Inspired by the music of a ghost show on TV, the composer
borrowed a fragment of the chord progression he heard and
used it as the basis to create this composition. Techniques that
give the work interest and vitality include inversion, retrograde,
counterpoint, and harmonic pandiatonicism reminiscent of
Stravinsky. And yes, the title refers to caskets, so this will be a
perfectly ghoulish addition to a Halloween concert.

Water Reflections—Yukiko Nishimura.
A stunningly beautiful piece for the more advanced ensemble,
the melodies are gorgeous and the harmonies are thick and
lush. ere is nice interplay between all of the sections of the
orchestra that serve as reflections in the water. e piece is
contrasted by a nice, lilting up-tempo section in the middle
before returning to the opening material to bookend the piece.

Port Washington is a community on Long Island, New York
that is filled with centuries of history. Situated on a waterfront,
it receives intense weather. Capturing Mother Nature at work
in Port Washington, this work musically portrays the passage of
time in very powerful ways.
