new! Basic Music Theory and History for Strings
Workbook 1
Wendy Barden & Terry Shade.
This visually captivating workbook is part of the String Basics curriculum, however,
it is designed and recommended to be used alongside any first year string method
book. It is a perfectly designed workbook FOR beginning string players and it is
divided into two sections: Music Theory - concepts introduced are organized to match
with what most students learn in a 1st year method book: note/rest names; note/
rest values; steps and skips; D, G, C, Major scales; half and whole steps, and ear
training exercises. Exercises collaborate with string instrument fingerboard diagrams
to provide a strong connection of theory to their playing experiences. Music History
- history and development of string instruments and orchestras, biographies of 10
orchestral composers from the 1500s to the 2000s. Students will also read about
music related jobs throughout the centuries. Each historical period includes "The
Century Times," a 1-page newspaper highlighting bringing together elements of
music-related history with important non-music events, discoveries, and more. The
Teacher's Edition serves as an answer key and contains additional assessments, and
materials for ear training exercises. Online ear training tools are available through the
publisher. The Theory/History workbooks are designed for students to write in - they
contain Practice theory assignments and include thought-provoking questions in the
history portion.

Developing Virtuosity, Books 1, 2 & 3
Lynne Latham, Thom Sharp & Gayley Hautzenroeder.
Book 1 begins with open strings and basic notation, rhythms, and bowing skills. New
notes, notation, and bowing skills are added, reinforcing both right- and left-hand technique
and developing the cognition for string performance. It introduces students to: the basic
major and minor tetrachords on all four strings; essential rhythmic notation from whole
notes through eighth-note patterns; left-hand techniques such as easily played double
stops, left-hand pizzicato, and differentiating whole and half steps; and bowing techniques,
beginning with the detache bow stroke and continuing with staccato, slurs, producing
dynamics with the bow, lifting the bow, arco-to-pizzicato technique, and hooked and loure
bow strokes. Book 2 progresses to more complex rhythms, left-hand finger patterns and
techniques, bowing techniques, and preparation for shifting. It introduces students to: long
and controlled bow strokes, slurred legato and staccato bow strokes, string-crossing slurs,
and producing dynamic contrasts; new rhythmic patterns including dotted notes, triplets,
sixteenth notes, swinging eighth notes, and syncopated rhythms; new time signatures
including 6/8 and 3/8, along with cut time for cello/bass; and major and minor left-hand
string patterns, extended fingerings, and beginning octave harmonics and shifting. Book
3 contains solo literature that: enables the student to use higher positions with suggested
fingerings; features accidentals that challenge left-hand intonation; utilizes more complex
time signatures, multiple-meters, and challenging rhythmic patterns; and develops the bow
stroke to perform more expressive dynamics and musicianship.
