The King of Lovearr. Craig Carnahan. The
pastoral feel of this arrangement of the
ST.
COLUMBA
tune reflects the mood of the text. The
foreboding section of the 23rd Psalm that speaks
of "death's dark vale" is given a mysterious
treatment that eventually resolves into a beautiful
statement of praise.

Lift Up Your Heads, All You Bowed Low
Zebulon M. Highben. New hymns by gifted
authors and composers are always welcome, but
sometimes tricky to introduce. This concertato by
the hymn's composer solves that problem. The
hymn was written for the second Sunday of Easter
but works beautifully on many occasions. Susan
Briehl's evocative text is beautifully captured in
Highben's melody that moves across meters yet
remains very accessible.

l Lord of Our LifeDavid L. Almond. The German
hymn on which Philip Pusey's text is based was
written during the Thirty Years' War. The anthem
opens with a turbulent fanfare; a soaring descant
climaxes on "the day when hell itself appalls us,"
and leads to a quiet vision of peace.
10607293 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.95
l The Love of GodGregg Sewell. With newly
composed words and music, Gregg Sewell offers
a brief choral meditation on the boundless capacity
of God's love. An easy, flowing melody with steady
phrasing later builds in dynamic intensity to
highlight this love's transformative power, ultimately
coming to rest in quiet serenity.
10609658 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.70
l May the Living Christ Be With YouRichard
Clemmitt. With words by St. Patrick adapted by the
former Chaplain to the Senate, Lloyd John Ogilvie,
and the composer we are treated to a beautiful
choral benediction. Two optional French horns bring
more color to this moving anthem.
10598863 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.35
l O Clap Your HandsRobert Lau. Exciting
mixed meter propels this energetic setting of
Psalm 47. A solid organ accompaniment, an
a cappella middle section, and an optional brass
septet with timpani make it all the more exciting.
It will be useful on many occasions during the
year, including Ascension.

choirs, it is a welcome addition to the world of
choral literature.

a Latin and English text based on John 14:27 and
inspired by Gregorian chant, this is a stunning a

l A Place Called HomeJean Sibelius/arr. J.
Michael Joncas. This poignant new text by Michael
Joncas is perfectly paired with the tune
FINLANDIA. It
expresses the dream of a hope-filled society where
all humans are treated fairly with compassion and
grace - where the peace of Christ reigns in A Place
Called Home. Accompanied by organ.

Psalm 150David Willcocks. A joyous and
expressive setting of Psalm 150 for SSAA voices
and organ. The active organ part is in dialogue with
the voices, often singing a cappella, throughout the
piece. There is some use of dissonance and mixed
meter as well. This advanced piece is short, but well
worth the effort and musical challenges.

H RequiemEliza Gilkyson/arr. Craig Hella Johnson.
Singer/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson wrote Requiem
as a song of grief following the Asian tsunami in
December 2004, and the song found a renewed
audience after Hurricane Katrina devastated the
Gulf Coast region. This setting by "Conspirare"
conductor Craig Hella Johnson has been long
anticipated by choral groups around the world and
is powerful in its emotional impact.
10045096 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.90
l Saints of GodJames Chepponis. This setting
of the Song of Farewell can be done simply, with
soloist, assembly, and accompaniment (organ,
piano, guitar and flute). The use of a single handbell
(E5) is reminiscent of a tolling bell.
10608503 Two-Part . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.90
Search Me, O GodJoshua Evanovich. With
a flowing melody, a rich organ accompaniment,
and familiar words from the Psalms, Joshua

beautiful, this anthem will lead your congregation
into an attitude of reverence and confession.

are accessible. This traditional favorite will be a
useful ministry tool.

l Sing Praise to GodJohn Ferguson. This
exuberant hymn anthem has nice contrast, with
a slower, introspective middle section. The organ
accompaniment also shares its own voice in
some flavorful passages. The work also includes
passages for treble chorus, to enable a children's
choir to take part in this festive work.
10606268 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.50
Sing to the Lord a New SongKenneth T.
Kosche. This anthem presents the familiar text of
Psalm 96:1-3 with a buoyant setting in which each
voice sings its own melody to portions of the text.
The keyboard provides a rhythmic supporting voice
based upon both of the vocal melodies. The voice
parts are easy to learn because each is an engaging
melody on its own.

this is a very pretty selection for either youth or
adult choirs.

compositions. Excellent for communion or a short
second anthem.

Ubi CaritasVictor C. Johnson. A beautiful,
tender setting of the traditional Latin text that
features delicate melodic lines and a fluid
accompaniment. The contrasting middle section
provides interest and movement, and the echoed
phrases, independent vocal lines, and limited
ranges allow for it to be easily mastered for
concert or festival. A pronunciation guide and
translation are included.

l Unexpected and MysteriousCalvin Hampton/
arr. John Ferguson. Calvin Hampton was a
leading American organist and composer of
sacred music. His marvelous hymn tune
ST.
HELENA
is associated with two introspective and
profound texts, one reflecting on the mystery of
Mary becoming the mother of Christ, and the
other meditating on the all-encompassing grace
of God. Master organist and composer John
Ferguson arranged these hymns for mixed choir
with a flowing, colorful organ accompaniment
and descant for C or B-flat instrument.

Vencera el Amor (Love Shall Overcome)
Carlos Colon-Quintana. This piece takes its
inspiration from Romans 12:21: "Do not be
overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." It
was written to commemorate the martyrdom of six
Jesuit priests and two women on the campus of
Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador
in 1989. It may be sung entirely in Spanish or
English, or by alternating the two languages. The
music moves through a sense of lament and ends
with a gentle proclamation of the victory of good
over evil.

David Schwoebel. "Music of the masters, for the
Master" is exemplified in this sturdy adaptation
of an illustrious Brahms melody. A faith-affirming
text reminds the church of its mission, while

Hugely popular
UBI CARITAS
Ola Gjeilo. Liturgically, the Ubi
Caritas text, "Where charity and
love prevail, there is God," is
used as an Antiphon on Maundy
Thursday. Gjeilo's a cappella
setting begins in unison, evoking
plain chant, and gradually unfolds
into wider harmonies and a more
modern harmonic language. Vocal
ranges are reasonable with divisi in
the soprano and bass parts. While
challenging, the beauty of this
composition is worth the time and
energy needed to make it a useful
part of your choir's ministry.
