Singer/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson wrote Requiem as a song of grief following the Asian tsunami in December 2004, and the song found a renewed audience after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region. HELENA is associated with two introspective and profound texts, one reflecting on the mystery of Mary becoming the mother of Christ, and the other meditating on the all-encompassing grace of God. Master organist and composer John Ferguson arranged these hymns for mixed choir with a flowing, colorful organ accompaniment and descant for C or B-flat instrument. 10552682 SAB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.15 Vencera el Amor (Love Shall Overcome) Carlos Colon-Quintana. This piece takes its inspiration from Romans 12:21: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." It was written to commemorate the martyrdom of six Jesuit priests and two women on the campus of Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador in 1989. It may be sung entirely in Spanish or English, or by alternating the two languages. Liturgically, the Ubi Caritas text, "Where charity and love prevail, there is God," is used as an Antiphon on Maundy Thursday. Gjeilo's a cappella setting begins in unison, evoking plain chant, and gradually unfolds into wider harmonies and a more modern harmonic language. Vocal ranges are reasonable with divisi in the soprano and bass parts.
