Jazz Ensemble
Feliz Navidad—Jose Feliciano/arr. Peter Blair.
A holiday favorite for sure, this Jose Feliciano
classic is set here as a bossa nova at about 128
bpm. It's a fine arrangement, well-notated, tasty,
and a breeze to assemble for a concert. Written
solos for either 1st or 2nd alto sax are included,
and the trumpet 1 range goes to written G on
top of the staff. Optional parts are included for
expanded instrumentations. Give it a listen, and
you'll like it!

Frosty the Snowman—arr. Mike Lewis. Simply
one of the best holiday charts this year! It begins
with an easy-going introduction in the rhythm
section, then the tune gets played through once
with a nice swing to it, and then, all the stops
get pulled out for a big band shout sound that
your band will love! There's a surprise ending
to it all too!

Go Tell It on the Mountain (with Ode to
Joy)—arr. Paul Clark. This inventive Paul Clark
arrangement cleverly combines the familiar
Christmas spiritual with Beethoven's Ode to
Joy theme. Opening with a beautiful chorale in
a light gospel style, it then breaks into a driving
rock style at around 144 bpm. Further variety and
interest is generated by modulations through the
keys of B-flat, E-flat, and F to a big finish. There
are no individual solos, but lots of sectional solis
and solid ensemble sections. This accessible and
creative chart will be an awesome addition to any
holiday or winter concert!

Victor Lopez. What a gorgeous holiday ballad! A
solo trumpet eases you into the tune, followed
by lush lines in all the sections. This perennial
favorite is right on the money, with very playable
parts, modest ranges and tasty solos for trumpet
and tenor sax. Highly recommended!

H Hot Chocolate (from "The Polar Express")—
Alan Silvestri/arr. Mike Lewis. From the movie
"The Polar Express," Hot Chocolate is hot stuff!
A fun swinger in a jump style, it's loaded with
energy, based on the original recording and
has been skillfully adapted for the young player.
There are no solos, the ranges are modest and a
driving bass line makes it move along. To make
this chart flexible for all year, the arranger offers
two endings: one with a clever and effective
modulation to a Jingle Bells quote and one
without. Highly recommended!
