4e With Every Sunrise—Robert Sheldon. Add
a gentle moment of reflection and quiet repose
to your next concert with this expressive work.
This lyrical composition is all at once poignant,
uplifting, wistful, and yet hopeful in its presentation
and message. The impactful moments of power
and joy contrast with the gentle nature of the
piece, providing a vehicle for a broad range of
performance possibilities.

l Citadel—James Barnes. Composed to comm-
emorate the 150th anniversary of the University
of Kansas, this striking work begins with optional
offstage chimes (one or two sets) to depict the
daily ringing of the campus bells. Trumpets
then introduce a brilliant, fanfare-like figure that
quickly evolves into the opening theme. As the
music settles, a saxophone choir introduces a
slower, more pensive middle theme describing
the university's academic nature. The chimes and
fanfare then return to end the work in a dramatic
outburst of sound and color.

4e Concerto No. 1—Richard L. Saucedo. This spec-
tacular showcase features the entire ensemble
rather than just a single soloist. Throughout the
dynamic work you'll hear passages that highlight
the playing of the entire ensemble. While there are
"concerto"-type moments for solo instruments,
you'll hear featured chamber groups as well.
The horn section is also featured prominently
throughout this profound selection.

l Dancing on Water—Frank Ticheli. This delightful
and bubbling work is an exuberant dance that
exudes expressive feelings of unbridled joy.
Even the broad and sustained song melody is
supported by playfully crisp rhythmic figures
reflective of the opening dance. A powerfully
exultant ending provides a spirited finish to this
wonderfully vibrant and joyous work.

l Fantasia on Bogoroditse Devo—arr. Frederick
Speck. Inspired by the beautiful choral original,
the chant-like gracefulness of the melodic source
serves as the musical cornerstone. The music
unfolds from a quiet opening, inviting the listener
into a distant, reserved first statement of the main
melody. The work then develops as a broad arch,
becoming increasingly vivid until an exuberant
arrival and release by the full ensemble. A very
nice setting for mature bands.

l For The President's Own—John Williams. While
noted as one of the greatest of film composers,
John Williams also has a special relationship
with the United States Marine Band. This work,
described as a "curtain raiser," was composed
in honor of the band's 215th anniversary. It's a
spirited work that offers virtuosic challenges for
every section and is a stunning addition to the
repertoire of mature bands.

4 Furioso—Gary P. Gilroy. Wild and passionate,
mature ensembles will love this challenging
work. The tempos and dynamic ranges are
extreme, fueling an intense and persistent
energy. Aided by constantly shifting meters, the
nervous energy and pulse builds to a crashing
climax that subsides into a "smoking fuse"
section. This then reignites the introductory
material, only faster now, to bring this exhil-
arating work to a fantastic close.

4 Groovy Loops—J. Scott McKenzie. This short,
energetic, and jazzy piece is a lot of fun to play
and listen to. The title refers to repeated patterns
and phrases that provide support for the melodies
and intertwined syncopated lines. A large palette
of colors with moving lines, percussive effects,
and rich harmonies make this an essential part of
every band's library!

le Hail the Champions—James Curnow. This
dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music
composed for the Olympic Games. A brilliant
fanfare serves as an introduction and unifying
link throughout followed by the 1986 Olympic
Hymn set in a beautiful lyric style. The final
section presents a new version of Olympic
Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag and
closes in dramatic fashion with elements of the
opening fanfare.

l Joropo—arr. Johan de Meij. Originally written
for piano, this delightful work displays a wealth
of rhythmic vitality. It's a lively 3/8 piece that's
written in the style of a typical Venezuelan
dance, charming as well as lively, and will
provide a decidedly international flair to concert
programming.

le Nordanvind—Carl Strommen. A symphonic
tour de force, this rhapsody is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs. Viking-influenced
melodies are weaved into a seamless setting
that brings out all the rich flavor and history of
the Scandinavian people. At times bold and
aggressive, at other times lush and beautiful, it
employs all the instrumental colors of the modern
concert band to create a stunning work for more
advanced ensembles.

le San Andreas Landscapes—Rossano Galante.
Depicting the beautiful landscapes of the San
Andreas terrain, this sweeping work begins
with a sparkling introduction, mirroring the sun
exploding out of the mountainous vistas. Soaring
and robust, the main theme is first stated in the
horns and then passed on to the trumpets. A
calmer lyric section features soloistic dialogues in
the woodwinds, and after a brief recapthe work
culminates in a dynamic and riveting conclusion.

H Second Suite in F—Holst/arr. Matthews. Written
in 1905, this exceptional suite, based on English
folk songs, is every bit as important and masterful
as Gustav Holst's "First Suite In Eb." Together,
these two works provide critically important
cornerstones for any good band library.

4 Shadow Waltzes—Brian Balmages. Drawing
on the contrast of darkness against light, this
innovative work is menacing at times, seemingly
innocent at others, and nearly out of control
at its most volatile moments. A static rhythmic
pulse forms the backdrop for the entire piece as
shadows seem to move throughout darkness in
a playful yet deceitful way. An invigorating and
unique work!

4 A Southern Hymn—Bill Locklear. Based on the
hymn tune How Firm a Foundation, this piece
opens with a sparkling fanfare followed by several
fragments of the tune and then the full hymn tune,
first in woodwinds then by the full ensemble.
A transition sets the stage for a light rhythmic
variation and a short rhapsodic statement. A
fast march-like motif evolves into a fragmented
restatement of the original, leading to a rousing
full ensemble shout which concludes the piece.

le Undercurrents—Robert Buckley. An electrifying,
virtuosic showcase featuring solos, duets, and
trios as well as various chamber sections within
the band. The music was inspired by watching
schools of fish and flocks of birds perpetually
moving with the ocean and air currents. Once in
a while a single solo shape, or two or three, will
appear as they dance apart and then are drawn
back into the ensemble. A powerful tour de force
from beginning to end.
