TEACHING IDEAS for: Joy to the World Play Dynamic Spoons • Provide 4 plastic spoons • Write one dynamic marking on each spoon: p, mp, mf, f • Explain, "p stands for soft, mp means medium soft. When you see mf in music, it means medium loud, and f means strong or loud." • Allow a student to choose a "dynamic spoon" • Now, they should say the chant "Joy, joy, joy to the world" (Measures 15 - 18) in rhythm at the dynamic level indicated by the spoon they selected • Continue the game until all children have participated • Finally, perform measures 15-18 with correct dynamics holding up the spoons at the appropriate time until the children remember their dynamics Play the rhythms, in measures 5-8, on non-pitched instruments • Distribute rhythm instruments. As the children sing measures 5-8, have them play the long-short patterns to reinforce crisp rhythms. Use balloons to help preschoolers explore their voices • Inflate a balloon and provide two new, unused fly swatters • Select two students to tap the balloon back and forth with the fly swatters • The other children should sing the path the balloon makes as it moves through the air (They move their voices high and low like the balloon on a "loo") Reinforce the understanding of dynamics in this song • Select one student and blindfold their eyes • Select another student to hide and hold a small object • The blindfolded student begins to walk around the room with the students clapping. A loud clap indicates that the object is close; a soft clap signifies that the object is further away. • The object of the game is for the blindfolded student to be able to identify where the hidden object is located by the loud and soft claps Make Paper Plate Shakers • Gather: Paper plate (1 per child), markers, birdseed, glue or tape, 6" crepe paper streamers (3-4 per child), clothespins • Decorate the bottom of paper plate with markers • Turn paper plate right side up and fold in half • Place a small handful of birdseed in the middle 33 Preview Copy
