t Run, Mary, RunBrian Tate. Encouragement,
determination and fundamental human rights sing
out in this spiritual with the powerful line, "You got
a right to the tree of life!" Sung with a diverse range
of vocal sound in a loose, gospel-like style, this a
cappella setting of the traditional spiritual includes
an optional part for djembe. With easy harmony and
very effective repetition, it really percolates!

t
Saints Bound for Heavenarr. Robert Shaw &
Alice Parker. Recorded by the Robert Shaw Chorale,
this traditional spiritual has a very happy swing to
it. The music perfectly reflects the joy of the text.
It's one of the many fine spiritual settings from the
Robert Shaw/Alice Parker collection, now available

Shine on Mearr. Rollo Dilworth. Once the
gospel swing gets started, it just never lets
up in this powerful selection that is a dynamic
musical statement for today's choirs. Its 9/8
meter coupled with an expressive, hopeful text
is compelling enough, but the bluesy piano
accompaniment and the generous use of seventh
chords make this a completely irresistible choral
feature. Highly recommended!

familiar song sounds and feels as if it has always
been a part of the folk song or spiritual genre. In

Scott Atwood. Spirituals are an important part
of the educational canon for young singers, and
they serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring
cultural importance of the African American
musical tradition. This unison setting, with optional
divisi, offers a playful sense of urgency as well

n Steal Awayarr. Gwyneth Walker. Steal Away
interprets the traditional spiritual Steal Away to
Jesus as a song of alternating sorrow and strength.
The refrains are presented quietly and mournfully:
"Steal away to Jesus. I ain't got long to stay here."
In contrast, the verses are sung with conviction:
"My Lord calls me, calls me by the thunder."
Similarly, the accompaniment varies from florid
arpeggiations (for the refrains) to rhythmic chordal
entrances (for the verses). Of special interest is the
use of scale patterns. In the opening refrain, and
on every occurrence of the words "steal away," the
scales descend, marked as falling tears, or stealing
away. At the conclusion of the song, the scales rise,
as the soul ascending to heaven. "My Lord calls
me, calls me home."

Commissioned by the ensemble Vox Femina, it is
attracting a lot of attention.

Tindley/arr. Barbara W. Baker. This is a lot of fun!
Even choirs with limited experience singing gospel
music will be able to perform the syncopated
and heavily accented vocal parts with ease. The
final repeated chorus features stunning dynamic
contrasts, hand claps and a dramatic ritard before
the final ending. A very strong choice!

Paul Kimpton & Ann Kaczkowski
Kimpton.
Music educators are
familiar with the teaching difficulties
that occur in the music education

other areas of a teacher's life, and
how to deal with burnout and other
stresses. Full of ideas for personal
reflection and written in workbook
form, this text encourages teachers
to reflect upon their own professional
journey in order to live a meaningful
life, to consider what is truly
important, and to set benchmarks
for the future. The stories threaded
throughout this book will be familiar
to all professionals, regardless of
their career choice, and will illuminate
ways of adapting to a continuously
evolving work environment and
changing personal relationships.
