heavily on the plainsong chant tradition, Durufle
composed his crowning work in 1947 for mixed
chorus, with mezzo-soprano and baritone soloists.
He included three accompaniment options, ranging
from organ alone to full orchestra. It is a meditative
work that is equally compelling on the concert stage
or in the church sanctuary.

Dubois/ed. Hopson. This lenten masterpiece is
a standard in choral libraries for good reason.
Hal Hopson has artfully retained all the drama
and poignancy of the original using the solo and
choral parts exactly as Dubois wrote them with
incidental rhythmic alterations to accomadate the
new English translation. The flexibility is derived
from the various accompaniment options. It may
be effectively played with Organ alone as found
in the choral score; choral score Organ with Flute
A, Harp, and Timpani; choral score Organ with
Flute B, Oboe, Harp, and Timpani; or a Chamber
