Sacred Concert All Voicings medium-easy
H For the Beauty of the EarthJohn Rutter.
John Rutter's engaging melody over a flowing
accompaniment is equally beautiful in either the
SATB or SA treatment. If you haven't already,
consider the instrumental accompaniment for a
fresh perspective on this sacred gem. Scored for
strings, winds, harp (playable on keyboard), and
drums, it includes instrumental lines that are as
lovely as the vocal lines. A perennial favorite, this
is a tasteful blend of text and musical expression.

Gather by the River to Prayarr. Pepper
Choplin. Two traditional American folk hymns,
Down to the River to Pray and Shall We Gather at
the River, are creatively blended together in this
outstanding anthem. Accessible choral writing
delivers warm texture throughout as each song is
first presented separately and then in tandem. Just
as a river, the text flows gently above a simple yet
supportive keyboard accompaniment.

H Gaudeamus HodieNatalie Sleeth. This 30-
year commemorative edition of a classic Sleeth
melody will be welcome with teachers and church

melodies and simple calypso rhythms are enhanced

piano-four-hands accompaniment. Natalie's unique
gift was to capture the essence of musical style with
simple, clean lines-you'll find the P/A CD a plus, but
even more fun is that the piano part can be played
by two student pianists.

CHOIR KARATE
A Sequential Assessment
Program for
Middle School Singers
Lisa Owens. As choir directors,
we are constantly challenged to
find ways to balance fun with
music performance and theory.
Assessment is an essential part
of what we do. This program was
created for students who used to
get nervous when it was time to do
testing, particularly sight-reading
tests. Based on principles from
learning karate, this program makes
a game out of testing utilizing short
tests with immediate rewards that
lead students to take ownership of
their own progress toward becoming
independent musicians. The
concepts for middle school singers
are divided into seven sections with
progressively more challenging
material at different "belt" levels.
The program contains a study guide
for each level as well as a student
tracking form for each year in choir,
written theory tests, and oral sight-
reading and rhythm-reading tests.
There are printable certificates and
reward passes for completing the
various levels. A great tool for district
alignment and common assessments
before students move on to their high
school choral programs!
