The Dragon PrinceRick Kirby. This descriptive
and engaging work follows the ancient tale of a
handsome young prince forced by evil sorcery to
live part of his life as a dragon. The music takes
on the feel of a movie soundtrack as the legend
unfolds in grand fashion. A quiet and serene
opening story sets the stage as the story unfolds
and the adventure begins. With a significant portion
of the fast section scored in 6/8, the music spans
emotions ranging from the dramatic, to tenderness,
to majestic.

Drums of the SaamisSamuel R. Hazo.
Opening with tribal drums, then featuring a
haunting melody simulating the traditional
wooden flute, this work is based on those two
themes. Both elements are developed, varied,
and enhanced throughout, with modern-sounding
chords and rhythms. By the end, the marriage of
the old and the new is complete. This powerful
work closes as it began: a restatement of
themes representing the musical and historical
foundation of the region of Alberta, Canada.

Four: On a Remix of Beethoven—
Randall Standridge.
Using the famous four-note motive
from the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony,

gigue in compound meter, a lyrical third section that features
French horns, and finally an angry dance in 7/8 that leads to
the grand finale. Not easy but well worth the effort.
