4 LuminariaWilliam Himes. Incorporating the
19th-century hymn tune To God Be the Glory,
this glowing work provides a thrilling musical
celebration that will be the highlight of any concert
setting. Segments of the hymn are used in the
decidedly dance-like and festive opening that
infuses a lively spirit throughout. Even when the
hymn is later stated in full, the action never lets up,
creating a joyous and buoyant presentation.

The MaelstromRobert W. Smith. Swirling
woodwinds full of intensity mark this demanding
concert work. A plaintive sax solo begins the work,
but soon gives way to a whirlpool of quick ostinatos
and bold brass statements. Excellent for contest
use, The Maelstrom will push your woodwinds at
the top of the medium-easy level, but the brass
parts are really quite playable. A bold choice for
your band!

here for younger bands, this setting allows all the
natural beauty of the melody to shine through as the

Jay Bocook lends his arranging talents to Holst's
most famous piece of music, and you can bet
the result is exceptional! This version is musically
exciting, well-paced and very approachable for
developing bands. Jay Bocook condenses the piece
to an appropriate length for bands at this level, but
he still manages to all of the various transitions
and motives from the original. Your band will feel
invincible when they play this one!

refers to the transformation of a caterpillar into a
butterfly. The piece opens with a beautiful statement
which then morphs into something new in the
faster middle section. The triumphant final section
emerges with lively percussion and ensemble
swells, simulating the butterfly getting ready to take
flight. This imaginative work ends peacefully as the
butterfly floats off into the distance.

the music through a variety of styles, moods and
textures. The title is a play on the words "matrix,"
which refers to an array of numbers, and
"metric," which relates to the variety of meters
used in the piece.

n Mills on the MerrimackRobert Sheldon. This
musical portrait of Lowell, Massachusetts and its
mill town traditions opens with a view of the river
on a misty morning. The music flows like the river

themes then combine for a vivid representation of
this historic city and its founding citizens.

4 Monotype for WindsCharles Booker.
"Monotype" is a printmaking process whereby
a single print is made by transferring paint or ink
from a smooth glass or metal surface. In this case,
it's used to best describe this single-movement
work in sound. The dramatic opening begins with
a low brass motive supported by active percussion,
growing as all the instrumental sections join in. The
texture grows in numbers, creating a menagerie of
sound that demands attention.

Music of the Water (Shenandoah/The Water

skillfully intertwines the melodies of Shenandoh and

through the landscape. Wonderfully arranged, it

begins quietly, as if approaching from a far distance.
As the work unfolds, the music takes on a constant
but somewhat haunting nature. Steady rhythms
are contributed by various sections, providing a
forward motion throughout while the percussion
section maintains a prominent presence. As the
piece comes to a close, the tonality lifts and ends
on a positive note, as if a mystery has been solved.

n Nessun DormaGiacomo Puccini/Bocook. One
of the most memorable melodies ever written, this
Puccini masterpiece is adapted wonderfully here for
concert band. The opening theme is presented by
a solo baritone (cued for trumpet or oboe), and is
followed by soaring statements for the woodwinds
and horn. The trumpets are added as the pieces
build towards its signature climactic ending. Band
music simply doesn't get any classier than this!

NettletonJohnnie Vinson. Most widely known
as Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, the
early American hymn tune Nettleton is creatively
arranged in this beautiful setting. Using the horns
as a focal point for the first section and followed by
a lyric portion scored for woodwinds, this work also
includes nicely orchestrated sections for brass as
well as effectively written dynamic nuances.

NevermoreBrian Balmages. This modern work
based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" tells
the eerie story of a man confronted by a sinister
bird, and his slow descent into utter madness. A
haunting piano line starts the piece, surrounded
by contemporary effects and textures. As the
man becomes more irritated, the music picks up
in tempo and becomes increasingly dissonant
and violent until it erupts in a cacophony of chaos.
Finally, the man "breaks," and the unsettling
sounds of the opening piano return to conclude the
piece. A truly dramatic work for band.
