n Themes from An Outdoor OvertureAaron
Copland/arr. James Curnow. A marvelous adaption
of the landmark original work for concert band.
Featuring the primary themes in a concise, yet
bold and appealing format, it's a great example of
Copland in his prime with its buoyant themes and
sense of optimism and joy.

Three Celtic DancesBrian Balmages. Based
on three different Scottish dance forms, this
work explores a wide variety of Celtic styles using
authentic and original material. Lively and spirited,
Movement 1, Reel, is based on the tune The Last
Pint of Ale. Well May I Behold My Faithful Brown-
Hair'd Maid is the basis for the second movement,
Air. It is presented as a slow, lyrical melody. The
final movement, Jig, is loosely based on the tune
Highlander's Jig and uses the most recognized
Celtic dance form. The piece may be performed
as a whole, but each movement stands on its own
if played individually. An excellent selection for
concert or contest.

l A Tom Sawyer PortraitRebecca Jarvis.
Mark Twain's colorful characters come to life
with a jaunty musical portrayal of Tom and Huck.
A ragtime sequence depicts the sleepy river
town where the story took place, followed by
an Americana-style ballad that is tender, lyrical
and poignant. This segues into a blues section
representing the mighty Mississippi and then
concludes with our heroes' return featuring a recap
of the good-natured opening theme.

l The Traffic CircleDavid Bobrowitz. This
imaginative work brings forth all the sights and
sounds of a busy traffic circle at rush hour. The
active and busy music conjures a roadway clogged
with commuters, brilliantly brought to life in this
musical invention.

l TrailblazerDavid R. Gillingham. This unique
and fascinating work begins with quiet mallet
percussion. As the music develops, so does the
listener's sense of searching and exploration.
Instrumental colors change and shift throughout,
sparking the imagination. Percussion and brass
maintain important roles throughout and are key to
the exciting finish.

Travelin' Musicarr. Robert Sheldon. Here's
some great fun you can't miss out on. The Arkansas
Traveler is one of the most popular and well known
of all folk songs, and it's never sounded better than
in this knee-slapping setting. Originally a fiddle tune,
this rendition is set in a Cajun-style groove and uses
a number of techniques to explore and develop the
tune in many unexpected ways. A real delight!

l Triumphant Celebration!Gary P. Gilroy. The
third and final installment of works that make up
A California Gold Rush Trilogy. This celebration of
those who flourished in their endeavor begins with
eerie percussion effects that represent the strange
new world they encountered. The action increases
tremendously through dynamics and scoring
representing the arduous work the miners did
under extreme conditions. This energy continues
in a relentless manner to the final climax which
glistens brilliantly like gold itself.

n UndecimRandall D. Standridge. The title word is
Latin for "eleven," which refers to both the "eleventh
hour" (the last opportunity to get something done)
as well as the opening metric feel of the piece. This
high-energy opener creates the perfect setting to
begin your next concert.

Burnin' Hot—Gary P. Gilroy. This composition offers
young band students with limited experience a fun and
energetic concert opener. A series of repeated eighth
notes with familiar accent patterns energize the work while
plentiful percussion scoring challenges the young players
of that section. Limited ranges and technical demands
make this accessible to musicians in their first year of
study. Played at an aggressive tempo that constantly
drives forward, it serves well as a concert opener or closer.

This fanfare celebrates your young students and their
achievement of successfully completing their first year
of musical studies. After a brief introduction by the
percussion ensemble, the winds enter with a stately theme
and march-like accompaniment. A contrasting section
features the woodwinds playing a tender melody before
the percussion brings back the initial theme, ending the
piece on an emphatically triumphant note.

Genesys Fanfare—David Mairs. This striking fanfare,
originally written for orchestral brass and percussion,
was later rescored for full orchestra and, ultimately, this
arrangement for concert band. The musical ideas are
straightforward, the theme being a rhythmic representation
of the name of the institution that commissioned the piece.
The asymmetrical repetition of the pulsating rhythm yields
a refreshingly compelling energy which invigorates and
drives the music throughout the piece.

I-77 (Fanfare for the Appalachians)—
Joshua Hummel.
This award-winning composition
is a short musical travelogue of Interstate I-77 as it
weaves through the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.
The music motors along at a steady pace as changing
landscapes of sound approach, come into view, and pass
into the distance - then another musical vista appears
on the horizon. The underlying rhythms, incessant and
determined, prove it's not the destination that's important
but the journey.

festival, or ceremonial performance, this powerful concert
opener will find an important place in wind band repertoire.

Rousing brass motives, dynamic woodwind flourishes
and active percussion ignite in an explosive concert
opening statement. Beginning quietly, the action quickly
accelerates and builds into a spinning sonic dynamo that
truly befits the title. Though technical demands are kept at
a very playable level, active parts in every section drive the
music forward while occasional time signature changes
dart and weave throughout this musical thrill ride.

brass with this spectacular concert opener. The fanfare
begins with three or more antiphonal brass players
placed throughout the concert hall. Large percussion
forces, which include optional parts, are used to help
introduce the rest of the ensemble as they join in the
musical celebration. Then the combined efforts of all the
performers coalesce into an overwhelming expression of
unbridled joy.
