Battle of Doro Passage musically describes a real naval conflict that took place October 16, 1827 on the Aegean Sea. The British brig Comet was attacked by pirates in Doro Passage off the islands of Greece, but was retaken by a nearby American convoy who had rushed in to help. The opening "calm winds" hint at approaching danger, as each ship is introduced with its own powerful musical theme that rises, falls, and overlaps in conflict on the high seas. This is a strong teaching piece for hooked bowings, dotted quarter rhythms, and dynamic contrasts in familiar first position. 10739222 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 60.00 10739223 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7.50 Blindsighted—Peter Terry. The work begins with a duet between violin and cello, symbolizing a conversation between the girl and her grandfather, before taking off into a joyful dance. The middle section reflects the inner peace that the author strived for before returning to the more lively melody. Brave Spirit is a unique work in the string literature with a powerful story to tell. 10752524 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 58.00 10752525 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8.00 Danza del Sonador—Thom Sharp. The Emperor Zhou reigned in China around the ninth century BC during the period generally considered to be the genesis of the I Ching - a series of divination texts that can help interpret thoughts and dreams. In the Dreams of Zhou starts with an expanse of harmonics that shroud a truly plaintive melody. This leads into an energetic section that evokes many aspects of what one would imagine to be a vibrant life in ancient China. At one point all the main themes are combined to create a truly dreamlike state. The work concludes with thrilling cascades of repeated sixteenth notes. 10757030 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 65.00 10757030E String Orchestra ePrint. . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 65.00 10757036 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10.00 Jubilation!—Deborah Baker Monday. The originality of the composer's thought process and compositional approach is clearly evident in this meditation on the nature of time as it intersects with transcendent musical moments. Long ropes of engaging melodies are suspended over intensely rhythmic backgrounds throughout the piece. In the composer's words, "suddenly, in this single eternal moment, the walls of time's cage fall away and, as if from some high peak, you catch a dizzying and joyful new glimpse of everything you could be." 10752552 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 70.00 10752553 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10.00 Textures—Bill Calhoun. Textures is a rhythmic and driving composition that contains shifting meters and obstinate bass lines underneath jaunty melodic material. There is a respite from the angular textures during a luscious slow lyrical section that features a beautiful violin solo. The pointed textures return for a dramatic finish. 10739268 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 60.00 10739269 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7.50 Triangle of the Tempest—Alan Lee Silva. Starting with syncopated figures over a repeated eight-measure progression, the piece builds in intensity as more sections and layers are added. The second part changes tone and is led by a heroic violin melody with a soaring cello obligato. The themes intertwine and the material develops into a dramatic conclusion with a final explosive ensemble hit. 10739278 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .M 60.00 10739279 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7.50 Ventus—Todd Parrish.
