This dramatic music is based on an authentic Japanese folk song Mori no Fukuro (The Forest Owl). This pensive and beautiful tune becomes the inspiration for a truly unique arrangement. Textures change mysteriously as a solo violin and solo cello exchange, melodies, followed by 2 solo violins soaring over pizzicato accompaniment. This builds into the final statement of the folk song with an obbligato in the first violins. Highly recommended! 10013227 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 50.00 l KorobushkaTraditional/arr. Michael Story. Korobushka ("The Peddler") is a Russian folk song and dance based on a poem written in 1861 by Nikolay Nekrasov. The music was written sometime in the late 19th century, although the composer is unknown. The dance that accompanies the song became popular in the early 1900s and was brought to America by Russian immigrants. Varying styles and an exciting accelerando at the end make this piece a solid choice for concerts. 10739941 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 46.00 H Loch Lomondarr. Noah Klauss. A folk music classic that is a staple for young players. Recorded by Michigan State University Orchestra on the CD, Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra Volume 1 - Pepper #5973728. 955013 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 l Londonderry AirDavid Bobrowitz. First published in 1855, this famous folk song originated in County Derry in what is now Northern Ireland. Though there are other settings for strings of this beautiful ballad already in print, this intense and concise arrangement captures the expressive moments inherent in the melody, and makes them approachable by less experienced orchestras. 10752540 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 40.00 4 Los Peces en el RioTraditional/arr. Janelle Zook Cunalata. This enchanting minor-tonality piece for string orchestra is about fish in a river that swim by Mary, Joseph and the newborn child, Jesus. The fish swim back and forth in the river hoping for a glimpse of the baby. The slurred eighth notes depict the fish swimming relentlessly, the staccato notes symbolize rain droplets as fish would hear them underwater, and the Latin American carol Los Peces en el Rio is heard over the swimming and droplets. 10752544 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 40.00 4 Old Dan TuckerTraditional/arr. Renata Bratt. Old Dan Tucker is a great finale or encore for your intermediate string orchestra. Every instrument has the melody in first position in this arrangement that teaches syncopation and cut time! All sections have optional singing parts as well. As the conductor, you can decide whether they get to sing it or play it. 10738940 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 49.00 l Old Joe ClarkTraditional/arr. Seth Gamba. Melody sheets are included with the parts so students may learn all versions of the melody in unison. 10738745 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 38.00 H Scarborough Fairarr. Brian Balmages. The aching emotion in this interpretation of Scarborough Fair is a genuine treat for young string groups. The lyrics of the 16th century (possibly older) ballad relates a heartsick couple proposing impossible tasks to prove unending love to one another. Embodied with simple counter lines, harmonies, and dynamic range, Brian Balmages paints an image of youthful love and its inherent theatrics. Excellent! 10091946 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 40.00 Simple GiftsJoseph Brackett/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle. Lighthearted and energetic, this arrangement of Simple Gifts suggests a dance-like character. Douglas Wagner. Bring the wonder of Africa to your orchestra with this fabulous arrangement of the traditional Zulu song, Siyahamba! This one stands out in the "fiddle tune" category. Carl Strommen has managed to take some of the sounds of Southern fiddling and mix them with a Western "Copland-esque" style and make something really special. Another great feature of this one is that the violas and low strings all get a chance at some fiddling. 2472094 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 47.00 l Two Celtic DancesBob Phillips. In Two Celtic Dances, each section plays the delightful melodies found in this fiddle-inspired piece. Though very easy, this setting presents the fiddle tunes Mari's Wedding and Finnegan's Wake in a variety of textures perfect for young string orchestras. Correlates to Sound Innovations Book 1, Level 5. 10738920 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 46.00 n Variations on an Irish TuneBrian Balmages. Based on Thomas Moore's famous song The Minstrel Boy, this work uses the full gamut of styles and techniques, from bagpipe drones to lyrical playing and even fiddle music. The work is composed of three variations that run together seamlessly. The first variation presents the entire tune, much more upbeat than it is usually performed. The second, lyrical section is absolutely beautiful and offers an opportunity for working on musicianship and phrasing without overextending the group technically. The final section is fiddle music and takes the audience on a thrill ride that builds to a glorious conclusion. A wonderful piece to showcase your group! 10008688 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 50.00 4 When Johnny Comes Marching Home Traditional/arr. Sandra Dackow. A guaranteed favorite! 10280280 String Orchestra, Percussion Req . . . . . . . . . . . 46.00 American Fiddle Triptycharr. Tim McCarrick. This medley of three fantastic folk fiddle tunes, set in a totally authentic style, will delight players and audiences. Highly recommended! 10310644 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 Appalachian CelebrationGary Fagan. This original piece is in a style reminiscent of the music of the rich cultural heritage of the Appalachia. Music is an important part of the Appalachian way of life. Traditional Appalachian music is derived primarily from the English and Scottish ballad tradition and Irish and Scottish fiddle music. African-American blues musicians played a significant role in developing the instrumental aspects of Appalachian music as well. 10594925 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 49.00 H Ashokan Farewell (from The Civil War)arr. Calvin Custer. The simple, memorable theme from the acclaimed PBS series makes excellent concert fare. Calvin Custer's realistic treatment includes the easy violin solo, piano and percussion. This is technically quite easy, but very emotional. 2238723 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 54.00 H Blue Fire FiddlerSoon Hee Newbold. Energetic, exciting and fun, are the words that best describe this kickin' fiddle tune. This fast and furious fiddling piece sounds much harder than it really is. Riffs, finger patterns and bowings are very idiomatic and lend themselves to fast playing. This is sure to be the hit of the concert! 2474322 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 50.00 H Danny Boyarr. Harry Alshin. Brendan McBrien. "S'vivon" is the Hebrew word for dreidel, a four-sided top that is popular with children during the celebration of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. In this arrangement, variations are created through the subtle use of motivic rhythms from within the melody, presenting the theme in different voices and keys in both arco and pizzicato. 10594939 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 49.00 H Ear IgamiRichard Meyer. Ear-igami is a fascinating musical tribute to the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Instead of a bow, each performer uses a piece of paper to make sounds and to "play" their instrument. Your audience will be entranced as they watch and hear the variety of effects possible in this charming set of pentatonic variations. Premiered by the composer's middle school orchestra, this music is sure to intrigue high school and adult musicians as well. There's nothing else like it! 10066927 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 56.00 l El Condor PasaDaniel Alomia Robles/arr. Janelle Zook Cunalata. This captivating work is a set of variations on the Pong Lang Dance, one of Thailand's most popular melodies. The pong lang is like a xylophone with its wooden keys suspended vertically on ropes, with the low notes on the upper end and the high notes at the bottom. The melody uses the pentatonic scale and is very simple in nature. The variations expand on fragments of the original tune in a variety of tempi and styles that make each new change thrilling! After this exploration, the original melody returns, gradually gaining speed and energy as one would hear in a traditional performance of this dance. 10015211 String Orchestra. . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 H Folk Tune and Fiddle DancePercy Fletcher.
