Richard Burchard is Associate Professor of Music at Bellarmine University where he teaches Composition and Arranging, Music Technology, Music Theory and World Music. He stepped down after twelve years of being department chair when he was appointed Executive Composer-in-Residence. Burchard taught for several years in study-abroad programs in Salzburg, Austria and South Africa. A native of Meadville, Pennsylvania, he attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and received both a Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Louisville. An award-winning composer, scholar and educator, Burchard's choral works have been performed and premiered throughout the United States at a number of state, regional and national choral conferences including ACDA and NCCO. European premieres of his choral music have been in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Other works have been premiered in China and Australia. Burchard's portfolio includes over 80 commissioned works, most of them written for a cappella choir. His first piece was published in 2009 and since then, he has published thirty additional works with the Fred Bock Music Company, Gentry Publications, Pavane Publishing, H.T. Fitzsimons Co., and National Music Publishers. Burchard also has two choral series with Gentry Publications: The Choral Music of Richard Burchard and The Richard Burchard Choral Series. Burchard was named the Kentucky Music Teachers Association 2008 Commissioned Composer and has served as composer-in-residence for a number of organizations, including: The University of Kentucky Choral Department, Lexington, KY (2011–2013); The Louisville Vocal Project (2010–present); Voces Novae, Louisville, KY (2009–2010); St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Louisville, KY (1998–1999); and The Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville KY (1999–2001). His most recent residency was at The American Cathedral in Paris, France from January 5 – 24, 2017. The Seven Last Words of Christ, an 8-movement work for choir and strings, was commissioned by the University of Southern Mississippi and premiered in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on April 28, 2016. Burchard has written two additional major works: In Memoriam, a 10-movement work for choir and orchestra, which was commissioned by the Louisville Master Chorale and premiered on October 19, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Falling Stars, a 6-movement work for low voices, strings, piano, harp and clarinet, will be premiered in January of 2018 in Louisville, Kentucky. Burchard stays active as a singer and conductor. He is founder and artistic director of PROTUS, a chamber choral ensemble in Louisville, dedicated to the research and performance of lesser- known choral repertoire from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, and occasionally newly-composed works.
