Adeste Fidelis—arr. Richard DeRosa. Arranged
for the WDR Big Band (Germany), Richard
DeRosa has written a beautiful masterpiece on
this traditional Christmas favorite. Scored as a full
ensemble chorale, this moving piece is filled with
fluid cantabile lines, engaging counterpoint, lush
harmonies, interesting modulations and gorgeous
ensemble climaxes. The use of the rhythm section
is kept to a minimum, with only bass and drums/
triangle, as the focus is on a pure chorale sound.
Soaring trumpets glide this Christmas favorite
to a pleasing finale. DeRosa's interpretation
of Adeste Fideles is a fantastic addition to any
holiday concert program, and will surely stun and
move your audiences with its allure.

Angels We Have Heard on High—arr. Richard
DeRosa. Set as a bright swinger at about 200
bpm, and originally arranged for the WDR Big
Band (Germany), Richard DeRosa's arrangement
of the traditional Christmas song Angels We Have
Heard on High is an adventure from beginning
to end! Reminiscent of Neil Hefti's arrangement
of Cute for the Count Basie Orchestra, DeRosa
starts off with some interplay between the wind
melody and drums. There's solo space for drums
and piano or guitar, and the lead saxophone is on
soprano. Replace the first "Gloria" section with a
great bebop sax soli and this arrangement already
has audiences waiting to hear what comes next.
Inventive and creative!

Here's a very clever arrangement of this holiday
gem! It's a drum set on brushes feature at
around 172 bpm in the style of Hefti's Cute with
a written or ad lib trumpet 2 solo. There's tons
of nice ensemble work and a lead trumpet range

Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming—arr. Bob
Curnow. With a nod to the wonderful Dave
Maddux arrangement written for the vocal group
First Call, Bob Curnow has created a gorgeous
version for big band. Every jazz group needs
Christmas charts to perform, and this one is
beautiful in its simplicity and overall effect.
It begins quietly in a jazz chorale style and
gradually builds to a dramatic climax followed by
a sonorous ending. There are no solos. Turn off
the house lights, put the spotlight on your band,
and you will be able to hear a pin drop when you
finish this beautiful arrangement. Very highly
recommended!
