e Andalucia—Victor Lopez. Andalucia has always
been a very musical land and the unique music
and exotic dances have inspired composers
throughout history. This tradition continues
with this inspired work, flavored by the colorful
blended sounds of the flamenco traditional march
styles. Full of fire and energy it will spice up any
young band concert!

H Forward March!—Paul Murtha. Here's a
snappy little march that your drummers are just
going to love! They get a spotlighted percussion
break, and there's also a nice "trio" melody
for clarinets, strong melodic writing with easy
counterlines and a strong full band finish. Bright,
invigorating and reminiscent of some of the
great classical marches, this is a strong choice
for your beginners!

n The Gladiator—John Philip Sousa/arr. Michael
Story. Composed in 1886 by "The March King"
himself, this familiar bold march is a real treat.
Retaining Sousa's original intent, the theme
incorporates light staccato notes in addition
to full-value quarter notes, all in the appealing
march style for which he's so well known. A great
teaching and performance choice!

4 Into the Court of the King (March)—Rob
Romeyn. Stately, regal and dignified, this
march begins softly, gradually growing as the
music develops, creating the feeling of a courtly
procession. The ranges are limited but this
exceptional march will make your band sound
musically rich, mature, and confident. Suitable for
any concert or festival performance, it's beginning
band writing at its finest.

4 King's March—Terry White. Capturing the
pomp and pageantry of a royal coronation, this
original march is a top-notch training work for the
young band. It hits the grade level solidly, with
enough teaching points to make it educationally
worthwhile but can still be performed with a
minimum of rehearsal time.

e March from "First Suite for Military Band"—
Gustav Holst/arr. Story. Historically important,
the suite this comes from is one of the first
pieces written exclusively for military bands. This
arrangement is based on the second theme of
the March, a very lyrical melody reminiscent of
British folk music. This accomplished setting
brings this cherished work to the stands of your
beginners, a most welcome addition to beginning
band repertoire!

e Union March—Mekel Rogers. Now even the
youngest of bands can play a great traditional
march without excessive demands on chops or
technique. Complete with opening strain, dog-
fight section, and final strain, this musical march
lets directors focus on teaching march style and
phrasing. An excellent and welcome addition for
very young bands!

4 American Legion (March)—arr. Andrew
Glover. A classic American march perfect for
any concert. Limited ranges and technical
demands make this a great march for middle
school and smaller, less experienced high
school bands. The first half features solid
interplay between melody and countermelody
as the first trio features a contrasting melody
ornamented by upper woodwinds. Closing with
a powerful finish, the whole band has a chance
to shine in this stirring and stylish march.

4 Chimes of Freedom—Robert W. Smith.
Written in a traditional form and style, this
original march is suitable for concert and festival
performance as well as patriotic and ceremonial
events. The chimes are featured throughout as
they interact with the melodic lines presented
in the wind sections. Accessible to most
developing bands in their second and third year
of instruction, it's sure to be an instant classic in
the band repertoire.

Darklands March (March Through the Dark
Forest)—Randall Standridge. This somewhat
dark and edgy concert march is written in minor
mode with the militaristic first half of the march
in stark contrast to the lyrical trio. An expertly-
written easy concert march that is also an
excellent work for teaching march style, dotted
eighth/sixteenth note rhythms and motivic
development.

another gem from the magical pen of Karl L.
King. Tuneful melodies, clever countermelodies,
and interesting percussion parts remain a hall-
mark of the King library. Musicians throughout
the world have benefited greatly from this famed
composer's long list of successful marches.

4e Generosity—Matthew N. Putnam. This catchy,
original concert march is in a standard march
form but is written for the abilities of developing
players. It's reminiscent of the wonderful
marches of Bennett or King, complete with
tuneful melodies, interesting harmonies, and a
few chromatic twists thrown in to make it even
more appealing. Perfect for teaching the march
style and form to growing musicians.
