4e Power—Harold Bennett/arr. Larry Clark. This is
one of Harold Bennett's (pseudonym of Henry
Fillmore) lesser-known marches that falls into
the "hidden gem" category. It's a tuneful 6/8
march from the original Bennett Band Book that's
written in standard march form but is unique in
that it includes a rousing break strain. A great way
to reinforce march style to younger students as
they prepare for the more challenging marches of
Fillmore, Sousa, and others.

le The River Kwai March—Malcom Arnold/arr.
Robert Longfield. From the classic World War II
film from 1957, "The Bridge on the River Kwai,"
here is the world-famous march that incorporates
Kenneth Alford's Colonel Bogey March along with
Malcolm Arnold's original counterline melody.
The whistling part is optional, but adds a unique
and authentic touch.

4 Spirit of '44—Bob Cotter. Toward the end of
World War II, both sides had amassed a great
number of prisoners who were used as labor to
build roads and bridges. To keep morale high
they made up songs that made the work go
faster and to communicate secret messages.
This original march was written in honor of those
valiant men and women, and the catchy melody
is sure to raise everyone's spirits.

4 The American Red Cross March—Louis Pan-
ella/arr. David Butler. Once you hear this terrific
march you'll wonder why it's not better known or
performed more often. Composed by Louis Pan-
ella, this fine march was meant to honor the human-
itarian work of the Red Cross during World War I.
A stellar example of the American march tradition,
it shows why the composer is considered one of
Pittsburgh's most revered musicians.

e Marche Diabolique—Brian Balmages. This
sinister-sounding march is perfect for directors
looking for something completely different.
Using elements from a traditional march set in
a contemporary framework, the music is based
on tritone intervals surrounded by expansive,
dark harmonic language. A wealth of percussion
adds great color to the unsettling character of the
music. Quite effective and intriguing!
