t O Tell Me Where the Dove Has Flown—
James McCullough. This haunting folk tune
(pensive dove) is classified as Type I, which are
hymns sung to settings of traditional ballad tunes.
This classification was devised by Phillips Barry
who was a pioneering early American folk-hymn
specialist and folk-tune collector. The melody is
in the Dorian mode and is repeated five times, but
with the presentation of each verse, new ideas,
lines, and harmonies are added and explored,
changing the flavor but letting the character
remain the same. A beautiful a cappella setting of
a traditional folk tune.
