L The Mermaid's Song—Joseph Haydn/arr. Thea Engelson. This delightful and fun-to-sing arrangement of the classic song by Hadyn is a great teaching piece for both technique and style. This haunting folk tune (pensive dove) is classified as Type I, which are hymns sung to settings of traditional ballad tunes. The melody is in the Dorian mode and is repeated five times, but with the presentation of each verse, new ideas, lines, and harmonies are added and explored, changing the flavor but letting the character remain the same.
