Bret Zvacek's accessible chart on the blues not only has a clever title, it's a laid-back swinger that's lays right in the pocket! There's nothing like a straight-ahead, medium blues chart for teaching the essential elements of jazz playing. Bacon Suite Blues has it all: a strong melody, solid ensemble writing, varying dynamics and an optional open solo section with included solo sheets. There's a soft ensemble section after the solos that builds to a wonderful shout and then a trombone section soli, then more hard-driving and down home swing leading to a cool finale. Ever since The Bare Necessities was first introduced in the classic movie "The Jungle Book," this catchy tune has remained a familiar favorite. Featured again in the 2016 movie, here is an easy arrangement that will make young jazz bands sound terrific. Parents, players and audiences will enjoy this swinging favorite designed especially for young jazz musicians! Playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. 10617926 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .VE 40.00 4 Bewitched—Rodgers & Hart/arr. Rick Stitzel. This familiar Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart jazz standard has certainly retained its timeless quality even today. Skillfully arranged for younger players in a medium swing style, this chart features saxes on the main melody supported by answers from the brass. Also included is a short written or improvised solo for tenor sax as well as solid scoring for the entire ensemble, plus it's playable with optional reduced or augmented instrumentations. Additional features include chord/scale sheets in all keys and written-out bass lines and piano voicings. Highly recommended! 10667346 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . E 40.00 4 The Big Beat—Gregory Yasinitsky. As the title suggests, this is a swinger with hints of classic Gene Krupa drum patterns. The tempo is around 200 bpm, there's lots of action for the trombones, written or ad lib solos for trumpet, tenor, trombone, and drums, and a huge shout chorus. Add great dynamics, well-notated rhythm section parts, and options for augmented instrumentations and you have a chart that really delivers. Highly recommended! 10756390 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . M 52.00 H Birdland—Josef Zawinul/arr. Michael Sweeney. Here's an excellent, easy version of Josef Zawinul's great jazz tune! Solid writing all the way and no solos required. 2230910 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . E 40.00 H C-Jam Blues—Duke Ellington/arr. Rick Stitzel. Whether you know this one as C-Jam Blues or Duke's Place, you sure will recognize all the great Ellington writing! Even the most inexperienced bands can do a fine performance on this jazz classic. The suggested solos are included in the parts for the entire section, so you can make it a soli feature if you prefer. There's a marvelous ensemble tutti section that starts softly then builds to the end. 2470818 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . .VE 40.00 H Caravan—Duke Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney. Everyone will recognize this Duke Ellington classic! It was one of the featured works in the 2014 movie "Whiplash" and uses interesting textures and alternates between a Latin groove and swing. This is a very effective production number with limited technical demands for young players. 2307627 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . E 40.00 H Dat Dere—Bobby Timmons/arr. Erik Morales. A soulful tune with a catchy title and melody! Erik Morales captures composer Bobby Timmons' medium swing groove. At a moderate tempo, with a slightly mysterious intro, the saxes grab the melody and it builds from there. A written (or ad lib) alto solo is provided with a fat shout chorus. This is an outstanding chart in every respect! Highly recommended! 10277767 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . M 52.00 4 Five Spot After Dark—Benny Golson/arr. Mike Story. Here's a Benny Golson jazz standard played by all the greats. This swing chart is ideal for every young jazz band as played around 132 bpm. All the ingredients are here for young jazz success: easy tempo, easy ranges, written solos for tenor and trumpet, a shout chorus, clear rhythm parts, and plenty of optional parts for expanded instrumentations to include vibes. Also playable by optional reduced instrumentations, this one hits the spot. Highly recommended! 10756374 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . E 42.00 4 Fly Me to the Moon—Bart Howard/arr. Allen Gray. Oh, jazz standards just don't get any better than Bart Howard's Fly Me to the Moon! This chart pays homage to the great Count Basie band and their iconic version with Frank Sinatra. With a subtle swingin' opening, this chart builds into a big tutti section before there's room for improvised solos. Finally, the band enters again to swing it hard all the way to the end. This one's got to be in your jazz library. Highly recommended! 10752071 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . M 65.00 l The Golden Striker—John Lewis/arr. Paul Murtha. Formed in 1952, the Modern Jazz Quartet influenced the landscape of contemporary jazz for over 40 years. With elements of classical music blended with cool jazz and blues, The Golden Striker epitomizes their elegant brand of jazz. This hard-swinging chart features the unique counterpoint of the original along with feature spots for the bass and saxes. There's also an optional open solo section with suggested solos and chord/ scale sheets in all keys included. Impressive! 10842285 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00 4 Hat Trick—Carl Strommen. This bright swing original by veteran composer/arranger Carl Strom- men is perfect for developing jazz groups. Appro- priate for concert or festival performances, it features adequate rests for brass players with the trumpet range to G5 and the trombone to F4. The chord changes are appropriate for this level and the written or ad lib solo section is open with solo sheets provided in all keys. The rhythm section parts give the drummer a nice concept of what to play, and notated piano voicings and bass lines are provided. Also included is a guitar chord chart. This appealing chart is playable by 9-17 players with optional parts included for flute, clarinet, horn in F, tuba and vibes for expanded instrumentations.
