n Groove Merchant—Jerome Richardson/arr.
Rich Sigler. Made famous by the Thad Jones/Mel
Lewis band, this accessible version has a gospel
rock groove that fits perfectly. Played at about 132
bpm with straight eighths, this chart is packed with
goodies like written-out solos for trombone and
trumpet, a lead trumpet range to written G on top
of the staff, a few clever modulations, and a great
development section. Toss in the optional parts to
include vibes and you have a fine chart. Groove
Merchant is very effective at any performance and
is highly recommended!

n I Love Lucy—arr. Paul Baker. Check out this
hip-hop setting by Paul Baker on the famous TV
theme. Unique, but very appealing, it's loaded with
wonderful writing, great development, written or
improvised solos for trumpet, tenor sax, and drums,
a hip sax soli, and the lead trumpet range is only
to written G on top of the staff. This outstanding
chart is also playable with optional expanded
instrumentations. This arranger does this style
extremely well and this one is no exception. Highly
recommended!

4 Turbo-Charged!—Larry Barton. This up-tempo
rocker is guaranteed to bring down the house! It
kicks in with a catchy hook in the first measure
and never lets up. Written solidly at the medium-
easy grade level, this tune features repetitive
rhythms and patterns that ensure your band will be
performance-ready with a minimum of rehearsal
time. Scored for optional limited instrumentations,
with careful attention to instrument ranges, and
written solos over super easy changes, Turbo-
Charged! is accessible to younger ensembles as
well as a lot of fun for more advanced groups.

4 Tweet Fatigue—Gordon Goodwin. Gordon
Goodwin wrote this superb chart for a good high
school jazz ensemble to be played around 126
bpm with a straight-eighth feel and a rock groove.
The saxes start things off a cappella then things
heat up in a quirky, but clever Goodwin way. Solo
space is provided for a variety of players with
separate sample solos provided for C, B-flat, E-flat,
and trombone soloists. An auxiliary percussion
part plus all the usual optional parts plus vibes are
included for augmented instrumentations. Here's
your festival chart that's highly recommended!

H Watermelon Man—Herbie Hancock/arr. Mike
Kamuf. Oh yeah! This is a crowd pleaser and a band
pleaser... a win-win! Fun, funky, hip, groovy — call
it what you want, this chart is excellent in every
way... and if you have a decent bari player, he or
she will really love this one. There are written solos
for alto and tenor sax, a stop-time without rhythm
section for the saxes, a fantastic interlude section, a
monster shout chorus, and some short drum fills...
what's not to like!? Very highly recommended!
Optional expanded instrumentation.

H Whiplash—Hank Levy/arr. Erik Morales. Featured
in the 2014 movie "Whiplash," depicting the
relationship between an ambitious student
musician and an abusive, yet respected instructor,
this chart is a super-exciting work in 7/4 composed
by Hank Levy and arranged by Erik Morales. Don't
be intimidated by the meter... it's challenging, but
after a few minutes it feels quite natural and the
students will totally groove on it. The melody is
stated by 2nd trumpet and 1st alto with solo space
for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is
critical and the rhythm section may want to spend
some quality time together. The lead trumpet range
is to written D above the staff. This is a unique but
very desirable chart to have in your library. You
won't regret playing Whiplash!
