Pepper's Basic Library selections [

] are charts that have stood the test of time and
are perennial best sellers. Here is only a sampling of these great charts.
If you do not have them in your library, you should definitely consider them!
Arnge Drank (Orange Juice with Attitude)—Paul Baker. Wow... orange drink with an attitude!
Texas writer Paul Baker presents an outstanding funk chart beginning with a piano riff to set up the
rhythm groove before the trumpet and altos hit with the melody. Trombones and low saxes support
with counterpoint. After the trombones take it through the bridge the saxes again state the melody in a
dramatic stop time section that moves into the trumpet and trombone solos. After a drum solo, the bari
and bass trombone shine as they set the funky foundation for the shout chorus. A return of the piano riff
sets up the final melodic statement and dramatic coda. Trumpet range to written High C. Trombone to
G. Pure fun, and highly recommended!

Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter Blair. This is a great old tune! Except...there's
nothing "old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing version of a marvelous, often-played standard
that opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes are
featured on a chorus and there is a written or ad lib solo for piano.

Birdland—Josef Zawinul/arr. Michael Sweeney. Here's an excellent, easy version of Josef
Zawinul's great jazz tune! Solid writing all the way and no solos required.

C-Jam Blues—Duke Ellington/arr. Rick Stitzel. Whether you know this one as C-Jam Blues or
Duke's Place, you sure will recognize all the great Ellington writing! Even the most inexperienced bands
can do a fine performance on this jazz classic. The suggested solos are included in the parts for the
entire section, so you can make it a soli feature if you prefer. There's a marvelous ensemble tutti section
that starts softly then builds to the end.

Cantaloupe Island—Herbie Hancock/arr. Mike Kamuf. Arranger Mike Kamuf scored this hip,
funky Latin-rock tune for younger players. Ideal for this level, it features three chords, a repetitive
groove, catchy melody and a hot bari sax part. There are written solos for tenor sax and trumpet,
and the lead trumpet range goes to a top line F with optional G on top of the staff. This chart will also
sound great with optional or expanded instrumentation. This is a superb chart from beginning to end.
Highly recommended!

Caravan—Duke Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney. Everyone will recognize this Duke Ellington
classic! It was one of the featured works in the 2014 movie "Whiplash" and uses interesting textures
and alternates between a Latin groove and swing. This is a very effective production number with
limited technical demands for young players.

Chameleon—Herbie Hancock/arr. Victor Lopez. Herbie Hancock for the developing band?
Yes! From Hancock's famous Headhunter recording, here is a great opportunity to play the biggest jazz-
rock hit of all time. The melody is first played by alto, tenor, trumpet and trombone, then the trumpet
section. Next up is a flexible, open solo section with a solo line written for all the winds so anybody
or everyone can solo! The top note for lead trumpet is written G on top of the staff. Super-cool chart!
Optional expanded instrumentation.

The Chicken—Alfred James Ellis/arr. Kris Berg. If you've got a strong bassist, this is your
showstopper! This chart, made famous by bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, gets kicking with a killer gospel
chorale, but is soon interrupted by one of the funkiest bass lines ever played! Soon the entire band is in
on it with a Tower of Power-style sound that is sure to impress everyone listening!

Come Fly with Me—Jimmy Van Heusen/arr. Rick Stitzel. Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and
Sammy Cahn for the title track of Frank Sinatra's 1958 album, this tune epitomizes the cool sounds
of the swing era. Here's a smartly scored version for young jazz ensembles with modest ranges,
but with authentic style. Included is plenty of tutti ensemble playing along with short solos (or solis)
for any sax or trumpet. A great way to teach swing, it's also playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations. Included are suggested solos and scale/chord sheets in all keys.
Highly recommended!

In the Mood—Joe Garland/arr. Michael Sweeney. This one's a must! Glenn Miller's big band
classic is one of the best known tunes from the swing era, and Mike's excellent arrangement puts it
within reach of young bands. Comfortable ranges, easy rhythm patterns and written solos make this a
perfect choice to teach your students how to swing!
