H 25 or 6 to 4—Robert Lamm/arr. Mike Story. You
know it, you love it! The opening motive is very
catchy on this authentic sounding chart on the
rock classic made famous by the group Chicago.
Master arranger Mike Story works his magic to
create an accessible, fun-to-play jazz ensemble
chart. Everything you need is written out, including
brief solos for trumpet 1, trombone 1 and optional
guitar. With easy brass ranges, it's easy to rehearse
and play, but still a hard-driving chart. Very nice!
Optional reduced or expanded instrumentations.

n Africa—Paich & Porcaro/arr. Ralph Ford. Here's
a wonderful take on the group Toto's classic rock
tune from the '80s. It's solidly scored throughout
and sounds amazingly like the original while
remaining accessible for developing jazz bands.
With nice dynamic contrasts, an uncomplicated
melodic line, and a medium rock groove, this chart
is one that younger players can really dig into, yet
it will sound mature when performed by a more
advanced group. More features include: half-note
tempo of 90 bpm; written or ad lib solos for alto sax
1 and trombone 1; trumpet 1 range to written G on
top of the staff; and optional parts for flute, clarinet
and vibes. Great tune, fine chart!

4 Billie Jean—Michael Jackson/arr. John Berry.
The song that launched Michael Jackson's famous
"moonwalk" was also one of the top-selling singles
of the year in 1983. This chart features the signature
bass line and catchy melodies and is a great-
sounding chart for young ensembles or bands with
limited rehearsal time. The iconic melody is traded
around between the saxes and brass. There are
no solos, it's playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations, and written out bass
lines and piano voicings are included. Classic rock
at its best! Highly recommended!

H Blackbird—Lennon & McCartney/arr. Mike
Tomaro. Perhaps one of the Beatles' lesser known
tunes, Blackbird remains one of their most creative
and memorable. Mike Tomaro's smooth setting
uses a blend of light funk along with a brief samba
section to create a truly outstanding effect. The
theme is stated simply in the beginning by trumpet,
followed by an array of orchestrational textures and
harmonies. Highly recommended!

n Cissy Strut—arr. Rick Stitzel. Originally recorded
by The Meters in 1969, Cissy Strut has since
become a model for playing funk as recorded by
both jazz and rock artists. The signature bass line
is played by trombones, tenors and baritone sax,
and the entire band joins in with catchy riffs. There
are short solo breaks for the bass and drums, along
with solo or soli spots for saxes and trumpets. The
solos are suggested or improvised, or played as
written by the individual sections. Playable with
optional reduced or expanded instrumentations,
