My first experience of trying to compose
came when I was sixteen years old. I
was inspired by some of the Christian youth musicals
of the day, such as Tell It Like It Is and Good News.
When I sat down to write my version of the next hit
musical, I realized that my theory and music notation
skills were so undeveloped that I had no idea how to
notate what was in my head. I gave up…at least until
I had a chance to learn more about that in college.
Because I was not a composition major, I believed that
I would never make a good composer. I decided to be
an arranger because that was an easy next step based
on my improvisation skills at the piano. I had great fun
arranging choral music. One day I was commissioned
to compose a new choral piece, not just arrange one.
I don't remember what I wrote, but it must have been
successful enough that I tried it again and again. I
gradually learned the craft of composition simply by
doing it through the process of trial and error. Now I'm
truly grateful that I can offer "a new song to the Lord."
