AND THERE WAS LIGHT - SATB
3
AND THERE WAS LIGHT uses scripture, song and narration to share the
story of Jesus' birth. The use of "light" as a sacred symbol in each
reading and anthem invites the use of candles as an extra-musical
element in presentations. A gradual illumination of the sanctuary as the
cantata unfolds is one strong possibility.
There are eight separate "LIGHTS" presented in the various movements
of the work. During the narrations, place candles
on the altar or around
the front of the sanctuary to illuminate the theme of each movement.
THE LIGHT OF HOPE
THE LIGHT
OF PEACE
THE LIGHT OF JOY
THE LIGHT OF LOVE
JESUS, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
THE LIGHT OF GLORY
THE LIGHT OF WISDOM
THE LIGHT EVERLASTING
Light one candle for each movement. Then, with the final candle, raise
the lights throughout the auditorium to allow for the option of including
congregational participation on the carol, "JOY TO THE WORLD."
This brings the work to a dazzling festival conclusion. Feel free to adapt
the work to your own worship spaces and traditions. It is always an
encou
ragement to see how thoughtful directors adapt my work for their
worship ministries.
