From the acclaimed 1962 album "Moment of Truth" by the Gerald Wilson Big Band, Viva Tirado was the impressive lead off tune. Even though this is scored by Michael Philip Mossman for just six horns in the Little Big Band Series, the writing is sophisticated and full sounding. Written in 3/4, but featuring an Afro-Cuban 6/8 groove, this marvelous chart includes solos for tenor or trumpet. Michael Mossman. Made famous by John Coltrane, but treated here in a more traditional Afro-Latin style, this is something a little different for jazz ensemble. As with all Mossman charts, the rhythm section is meticulously notated to ensure the correct style. The 3/4 pattern throughout draws heavily on African influences and the melody is masterfully passed from section to section. This calypso groove chart is a wonderful style for jazz musicians to learn- it's fun to play and has great energy. The great ensemble writing throughout frames the open solo section. In this classic minor blues tune from Dizzy Gillespie, Mike Tomaro starts this version as a funky mambo, but then shifts the style to swing and back again to the mambo feel. This well-paced arrangement features a great feel plus solos for trumpet and tenor. Chili Today, Hot Tamale is set in a samba groove in cut-time at around 90 bpm. It's accessible for a solid easy to medium grade level, there are written solos for trombone 1 and tenor sax 1, optional parts for expanded instrumentations, and a trumpet 1 range going to written A above the staff with optional lower notes. Victor Lopez' arrangement of this great tune by Denis DiBlasio is a more accessible version than the original. At a medium grade level with an upbeat samba groove, everybody gets some action with the classic Maynard Ferguson trumpet solo harmonized for the trumpet section in a playable range. There is a sax section soli that can also be a solo for bari sax or any saxophone. An optional percussion part will complete the package. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the 1st trumpet part is featured throughout with the distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo range is up to an optional written high C, but the solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well.
