BLUES & SWING BALLADS
It Is What It Ain't—Jamie Roth. Wow! This is
a blues with serious attitude! It comes out of the
gate roaring and includes plenty of interesting
details that make this a standout chart for high
school bands. Great dynamic contrasts are built
in so there are some moments that whisper and
some that explode. It's a great addition to the
swinging blues repertoire at this level - you may
even hear Basie's influence on this one!

The Man I Love—George Gershwin & Ira
Gershwin/arr. Mark Taylor. Using a sensuously
slow Basie style, here is a distinctive setting of
this Gershwin standard that features the entire
ensemble. Lush brass scoring on the "A" theme is
contrasted with the saxes on the bridge, followed
by a solo for trumpet and ending with a stunning
ensemble shout chorus.

Marionette—Len Pierro. This medium swing is
a killer chart that swings hard! Muted brass add
some intriguing colors, and a great trombone soli
will engage those players in your group. There is
also some quality shout-chorus writing that will
expose your students to all of the challenges of
great ensemble playing. Highly recommended!

Moanin'—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew Homzy.
Here's a playable yet very effective arrangement
of this signature Mingus composition. The familiar
baritone sax riff is handled by three saxes, and
there is also a substantial soli for the entire
saxophone section. Optional parts are included
for flute, clarinet and French horn. A terrific
introduction to the genius of Mingus!

H Moten Swing—Buster & Benny Moten/arr. Ernie
Wilkins. There have been a lot of published charts
on this great Ernie Wilkins arrangement, but this is
the original version as played and recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra. Moten Swing is possibly
the most played piece of music by the Basie
band and has been recorded countless times,
making it a must-have for any band's library
as it exemplifies wonderful roaring ensemble
passages with soft, soft sections which will
make your band sparkle. This new Finale edition
includes a transcribed piano solo throughout,
detailed rhythm section parts which are written
except during the solos, and clearer, cleaner,
more complete parts. Additionally, there is solo
space for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano.

Open Sky—Debra Stempien, Greg Turner. Here
is an up-tempo swing chart in a modal, post-bop
style employing chords with upper extensions
and polychords, reminiscent of the musical styles
of the Brecker Brothers, Pat Metheny, and Lyle
Mays. Three solo sections include both optional
written solos and chord symbols for students who
are ready to improvise.

composer Erik Morales delivers! This outstanding
shuffle chart sounds like a big old freight train
coming down the tracks, and it just builds and
builds! There's a wonderful section after the

soli without the rhythm section, and there are
great breaks for piano and drums throughout.

Sammy Nestico, this chart is a relaxed moderate
blues. Written for the Basie/Nestico collaboration

your rhythm section to develop that wonderful
Basie sound and feel. A must for every jazz
ensemble library!

Scarborough Fair—arr. Kris Berg. Arranged
for the wonderful saxophonist Chris Vadala,
this English folk song has been fashioned as a
contemporary-sounding chart in D minor that
moves from a loose, open swing to a straight-
ahead swing groove. Terrific development of
melodic material from the tune is paired with a
recurring triplet figure that ties the chart together.
Solo space for tenor saxophone and trumpet
(with Harmon mute) is included. Make sure
your lead trumpet has some chops as it gets up
to an E! This is a unique must-have chart for a
developed band. Highly recommended!

Stockings is one of the greatest jazz tunes ever
for big band. Arranged by Greg Yasinitsky and

yet is more accessible for developing groups.

H Angel Eyes—Matt Dennis/arr. Dave Wolpe.
Here is a natural pairing of ballad style with an
exceptional standard as a tenor saxophone
feature. Beautifully arranged, this chart features
lush harmonies, a double-time swing section,
and a nice sax section soli with tenor lead. The
tenor solo is completely notated and does not
require improvisation, although it could be added.
The lead trumpet range is to B above the staff,
and optional parts are included for expanded
instrumentations. Simply gorgeous!

Rick Stitzel. This beautiful and iconic jazz ballad
from the 1940s is a study in flowing phrases and
lush harmonies. Rick Stitzel's setting for younger
players focuses on the full ensemble along with
brief written or improvised solos for alto sax and
trumpet. Additional features include suggested

Li'l Darlin'—Neal Hefti/arr. Roy Phillippe. This
chart should be in every young band's library!
Neal Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential
slow swing ballad in the Basie style, and every
jazzer should be familiar with it. In this superb
edition, the arranger has changed the key and
reorchestrated the parts so it is playable by
ensembles at any ability level, and with reduced
instrumentation as well. The notes are easy,
but there's more music here than in many more
difficult charts. If your students play only a
handful of jazz tunes in their life, this should be
one of them.

Lil' Hefty—Zachary Smith. Ideal for young jazz
bands, this moderately slow swinger is a tribute
to legendary composer Neal Hefti. Lil' Hefty is
a melodic chart with well-noted articulations,
written-out rhythm section parts, and written
melody solos for trumpet and piano, all at about
80-92 bpm. The trumpet 1 range is to G top of
staff and is playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentation. Here's a great little
chart for change-of-pace programming and
teaching an important jazz style!
