Misty—Erroll Garner/arr. Terry White. Perhaps
one of the most familiar jazz standards of all time,
this easy but effective chart has a laid-back swing
feel. The tempo is 90 bpm with written solos
for alto 1 and trumpet 1, and the lead trumpet
range goes up to written E-flat top space. It's
also playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations. This chart delivers!

My Funny Valentine—Richard Rodgers/arr.
Mike Smukal. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart
gave the jazz world this beautiful ballad, and
arranger Mike Smukal sets it as a lush trumpet
or flugelhorn solo feature. The entire solo is
notated and can effectively be performed with
no improvisation. It also features a wonderful
double-time section with everything written
out, easy ranges, some nice substitute chords
and lush harmonies. This arrangement includes
optional parts for flute, horn in F, baritone and
tuba. This is an exceptional chart at an accessible
level! Highly recommended!

One of Those Days—Bob Turner. This chart
starts out with a triplet-based ballad section
featuring the trumpet and quickly changes to
a moderate swing with a great melody. The
saxophone soli is rhythmic and syncopated -
a great opportunity to challenge that section.
Flexible instrumentation makes this a great option
for many groups.

Over the Rainbow—Harold Arlen/arr. Alan
Baylock. Do you have two trumpet players
to showcase? Here is a ballad everybody
knows, scored as a trumpet duet feature.
Everything is written, no improvised solos,
the lead trumpet range is to C above the staff
and the second part is to written A. Lyrical and
melodic, this chart is a sure-fire crowd pleaser
impeccably arranged by Alan Baylock! Optional
expanded instrumentation.

Over the Rainbow—Harold Arlen/arr. Paul
Cook. This is simply a beautiful number for young
jazz bands! Rich and slow, it's easy to play and
sounds delightful. Paul Cook's arrangement is
great for developing phrasing and style, and he
even includes a solo verse for the piano (written
out, of course).

Prayer Meetin'—Matt Harris. Feature a young
pianist with this gospel style ballad. The solo
is entirely notated except for a short section
where the pianist needs to improvise over an
easy 4-bar sequence. The slow, infectious
groove is perpetuated by fully notated rhythm
section parts, trumpets in harmon mutes at
times and full band passages. There's an open
solo section for soloists of choice that is written
or improvised. This chart can be played with a
few as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, piano,
bass and drums, but is scored for full jazz
ensemble instrumentation.

What a Wonderful World—Douglas & Weiss/
arr. Alan Baylock. Alan Baylock sets this
wonderful tune in a sultry 12/8 groove played at
about 72 bpm, making it feel lazy and relaxed.
There are no solos, just sweet ensemble writing all
the way. The lead trumpet range is to A above the
staff and optional parts are included for expanded
instrumentations. This outstanding chart is an
ideal contrasting piece for any performance!

What a Wonderful World—Douglas & Weiss/
arr. Rick Stitzel. Giving your beginning band
great tunes like this to play will turn them on
to jazz forever! You just can't beat the appeal
of the tune Louis Armstrong made so famous,
and it's surely stood the test of time. This
very playable version is nicely scored where
each section gets a piece of the melody. Very
highly recommended!

April in Paris—Vernon Duke/arr. Rick Stitzel. Made famous by The Count Basie
Orchestra, here is a great-sounding yet playable version of this standard for developing
bands. It includes feature spots for every section and optional written or improvised solos for
trumpet and trombone. This accessible chart maintains an authentic sound even in this easy
version. It will even sound full and complete with only 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and

April in Paris—Vernon Duke/trans. Jeff Hest. This chart is simply about style! And with
style is exactly how Count Basie and his orchestra played it! From the silky smooth sax soli
on the head to the Pop Goes The Weasel trumpet solo to the "...one more time..." repeat of
the last phrase, every detail of this jazz standard has been transcribed and reconstructed by
Jeff Hest. A remarkable, authentic way to tell your audience what swing is really all about!

Artistry in Rhythm—Stan Kenton/arr. Paul Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan
Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature and a true classic from the
big-band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this for younger players
while maintaining the flavor and energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off followed
by the iconic trombone solo in the medium Latin section. The exciting double time swing
section features the entire ensemble, then the maestoso theme returns to close things out.
Impressive!

At Long Last Love—Cole Porter/arr. Billy Byers. As recorded on This Time by Basie!,
this arrangement is pure Basie. Opening with a short figure reminiscent of the Count, the
band then swings at a bright tempo into a terrific version of this great melody. There is a solo
for tenor saxophone and moderate ranges for all.
