Jesus cried out, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." And then he breathed his last breath. When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 59 The soldiers came and took Jesus from the cross. They pierced his side with a sword, and he was taken to a nearby tomb where his body was placed and the tomb was sealed with a stone. The empty cross stood there as a grim reminder of Christ's sacrifice and it still stands today, etched in our minds, as a symbol of his undying grace. "Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."
