Choir Director: an "older" character who loves music! Helpful if he/she can "conduct" the choir in tempo! COSTUMES/SOUND EFFECTS/STAGE AND PROPS: lots of '70s-style polyester, tie-dye, wire-rimmed glasses, bell-bottom pants, tunics, leisure suits, headbands, peace symbols, etc. Long straight wigs and afro-style wigs. Thrift stores are groovy places to find these costume pieces! For East Westman, weatherman: a plaid suit, large bowtie, glasses held together with tape, etc. Choir members may wear scarves, hats or mittens which they shed once they have "entered" the radio station. Choir members could also brush fake snow off their shoulders if desired. Stage should include 1) a designated area for the radio station studio/control room with a narrow table and three chairs facing microphones, simple shelves for music behind the chairs; 2) adjacent to the control room, a large table for the staff in a breakroom or conference room setting; and 3) a larger open area for the choir to stand, either to one side or behind the two "set" rooms. An outside door can be "imaginary" — a specific spot where the choir will enter. Props for the radio station control room should include a record player/turntable, large silver microphones, 8-tracks in a stack, posters and record album covers from the '70s. Microphones should have cords; headsets should be large and bulky. When the electricity goes out, fake candles and flashlights can be used temporarily before bringing the lights back up on the actors. Other props needed: Sticky notes, Bible, and a "script" (for the program Hal writes). The adjacent breakroom/conference room should NOT include a microwave or anything else that would not have been present in this era. Additional props like colorful plastic chairs and retro-style soda cans or bottles will complete the room. If possible, use an "On Air" sign that can be lighted. A projected slide of the "On Air" sign could also be used. A large sign with the "K I N G" station logo should be prominently displayed. Superimpose the K I N G letters over a silhouette of your city's skyline! This could also be projected on the back wall or via a slide. KICK-OFF PARTY: Introduce your potential cast members to the '70s! Listen and move to disco music, play some '70s-era television commercials, then watch the accompaniment DVD available from wordmusic.com and listen to the songs.
