Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra and later revised for the SWR Big Band CD Basie-cally Sammy, this wonderful chart features a very bright tempo and a solo tenor sax. Composed by jazz legend Joe Henderson, this up-tempo burner from Mark Taylor features a mesmerizing groove and masterful scoring. The rhythm section sets the groove and then a trio of tenor, guitar and vibes carries the melody, while layers of sound are gradually added creating a powerhouse effect. Solo space is included for tenor saxophone and guitar, and there are feature spots for the brass section and later the saxophones. Here's Freddie Hubbard's exciting jazz standard, as arranged by Eric Richards. The melody is stated by saxes and trumpet 2, solo space is for alto 1, tenor 1, trumpet 2 and guitar, all optional as needed. There is space for a drum solo as well. Bill Holman's music never disappoints, and Introduction to an Ending is no exception! Originally written for and recorded on the Charlie Barnet Big Band album 1967, this straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, and drums. Filled with energy and excitement, the shout chorus comes roaring in to take the tune out with a bang.
