Originally written for and played by Bud Shank, this showpiece for alto sax features a wide dynamic range and calls for a soft, smooth approach to background figures. Although written solo lines are provided throughout, the main solo chorus includes chord changes for players with improvisation chops. The chart closes out with a solo cadenza over a sustained ensemble chord. 10283500 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . MA 56.00 H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/ arr. Gordon Goodwin. A few twists and turns added to the original Benny Goodman swing version make this chart a definite crowd and band pleaser. Gordon Goodwin's arrangement features a clarinet part and an alternate alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet. Solo changes are provided for all saxophone parts and clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is to high F-sharp. While not recorded by Goodwin's Big Phat Band, it's a staple of the band's library and is played often in live performances. It's a wonderful rendition of this big band classic! 10311471 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . A 65.00 Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise— Sigmund Romberg/arr. Mark Taylor. From the rarely remembered 1928 operetta "The New Moon," this lovely tune has gone on to become a standard favored by many jazz artists. Set in a light samba groove, here is a terrific arrangement featuring solo alto saxophone throughout. The solo is beautifully contrasted with ensemble interludes and backgrounds, plus a short unison tutti feature. 10374142 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . M 50.00 4 Song for Lewis—Dave Mills. This laid-back and sultry ballad, set around 62 bpm, features a written alto sax solo that is wonderfully melodic with an optional section for improvisation in the key of F major. The full ensemble gets a chance to shine too with great legato and smooth passages. Song for Lewis is a great change of pace for any performance and can be worked up quickly. Your lead alto player can really shine during this tuneful original for advancing groups. The composer highly recommends using the wordless optional vocal part to enhance the sensitivity and warmth of the piece. Ranges and rhythms are very accessible, but the rhythm section's interpretation must be solid and nuanced. This is truly a beautiful work that belongs in every library! 10093846 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . M 52.00 4 What Will Be—Matt Amy. What Will Be is a slow, rock ballad to feature either alto sax, trombone or trumpet/flugelhorn soloists. With a beautifully conceived melody the solo part is highly emotional, lyrical and appropriate for the style, and is supported by an interesting harmonic progression. The soloist is supported by sweet counter melodies, there's a section for subtle improvisation by the featured soloist, and a recap of the theme before moving on to an ending with a brief solo cadenza. There are options included for reduced or expanded instrumentations and the excellent dynamic contrasts provide additional interest and maintain the direction of the chart. Highly recommended! 10607166 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . ME 55.00 Willow Weep for Me—Ann Ronnel/ arr. Kris Berg. A superb alto sax solo feature, this is a classic 12/8, bluesy and soulful treatment of this great standard! Everything is written out for the alto player and it has chord changes if preferred. The lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff. Give a listen to this great chart and decide for yourself. It's one of the quintessential features for alto saxophone! Highly recommended! Here is a natural pairing of ballad style with an exceptional standard as a tenor saxophone feature. Beautifully arranged, this chart features lush harmonies, a double-time swing section, and a nice sax section soli with tenor lead. The tenor solo is completely notated and does not require improvisation, although it could be added. ME 48.00 4 Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)— Santana & Coster/arr. Eric Richards. One of Carlos Santana's more memorable compositions is this instrumental hit from 1976. Along with Santana's own recording, the version by saxophonist Gato Barbieri also became a hit that same year. This solo feature for tenor saxophone features a haunting melody and the sensual style of the original and is authentically recreated in this version for full jazz ensemble. Kris Berg has composed a beautiful, sensitive and mature solo feature for B-flat, E-flat instruments or trombone.
