Samantha—Sammy Nestico. Originally written for
and played by Bud Shank, this showpiece for alto sax
features a wide dynamic range and calls for a soft,
smooth approach to background figures. Although
written solo lines are provided throughout, the main

improvisation chops. The chart closes out with a solo

Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/
arr. Gordon Goodwin.
A few twists and turns
added to the original Benny Goodman swing version
make this chart a definite crowd and band pleaser.
Gordon Goodwin's arrangement features a clarinet
part and an alternate alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet.
Solo changes are provided for all saxophone parts
and clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is to high
F-sharp. While not recorded by Goodwin's Big Phat
Band, it's a staple of the band's library and is played
often in live performances. It's a wonderful rendition
of this big band classic!

Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise—
Sigmund Romberg/arr. Mark Taylor.
From the rarely remembered 1928 operetta "The
New Moon," this lovely tune has gone on to become
a standard favored by many jazz artists. Set in a
light samba groove, here is a terrific arrangement
featuring solo alto saxophone throughout. The solo
is beautifully contrasted with ensemble interludes
and backgrounds, plus a short unison tutti feature.

Song for Lewis—Dave Mills. This laid-back and
sultry ballad, set around 62 bpm, features a written
alto sax solo that is wonderfully melodic with an
optional section for improvisation in the key of F
major. The full ensemble gets a chance to shine too
with great legato and smooth passages. Song for
Lewis is a great change of pace for any performance
and can be worked up quickly. Highly recommended!

True North—Mike Dana. This is a captivating,
contemporary even-eighth note ballad in the ECM
tradition. Your lead alto player can really shine
during this tuneful original for advancing groups. The
composer highly recommends using the wordless
optional vocal part to enhance the sensitivity and
warmth of the piece. Ranges and rhythms are very
accessible, but the rhythm section's interpretation
must be solid and nuanced. This is truly a beautiful
work that belongs in every library!

4 What Will Be—Matt Amy. What Will Be is a
slow, rock ballad to feature either alto sax, trombone
or trumpet/flugelhorn soloists. With a beautifully
conceived melody the solo part is highly emotional,
lyrical and appropriate for the style, and is supported
by an interesting harmonic progression. The soloist
is supported by sweet counter melodies, there's
a section for subtle improvisation by the featured
soloist, and a recap of the theme before moving
on to an ending with a brief solo cadenza. There
are options included for reduced or expanded
instrumentations and the excellent dynamic
contrasts provide additional interest and maintain
the direction of the chart. Highly recommended!

Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)—
Santana & Coster/arr. Eric Richards.
One of Carlos Santana's more memorable
compositions is this instrumental hit from 1976.
Along with Santana's own recording, the version by
saxophonist Gato Barbieri also became a hit that
same year. This solo feature for tenor saxophone
features a haunting melody and the sensual style
of the original and is authentically recreated in this
version for full jazz ensemble. The tenor solo is a
combination of written melodies with options for
improvisation. Here's a great way to feature your
