It is obvious that the shepherds are feeling very hopeless.] OLD SHEP: OSCAR: OLD SHEP: FRANK: MISSY: DAISY: MISSY: DAISY: MISSY: OLD SHEP: OSCAR: EARNEST: OSCAR: OLD SHEP: Heads up, shepherds, I need to talk with y'all about something. I know that we are all going through a very rough patch. Things seem pretty hopeless around these parts…but my granddaughter, Missy, is interested in becoming a shepherd and so she is going to observe what we do for the next few days. Let's not be too negative about our work, okay? [Extremely grouchy] Well, this is just great! We're broke and hungry. We're worried about whether we will still have our jobs by next week. And now, we have to keep a smile on our faces. I guess you want us to pull the wool over her eyes. [MISSY enters.] Shhhh! Here she comes now. Gang, I'd like to introduce you to Missy, our new shepherd-in-training. Hi, there, Missy! It's great to have you join us. I'm Frank and this is my brother, Earnest. We've been watching sheep out here for a long time. Outstanding! [As soon as she says, "Outstanding," the angels get in position for the announcement, but then relax when they realize this is not their cue.] It's outstanding to meet you, Frank and Earnest! Howdy! Welcome to our hillside, Miss Missy! I hope you enjoy yourself here. Guarding the sheep is a big job, but somebody's got to do it. Outstanding! [Once again, the angels get ready for the announcement and then, relax.] This is sure a beautiful night! Are the stars always this bright? [They all look up at the night sky.] Yes, the stars are especially bright tonight. And I don't think I've ever seen that huge star before. That star sure is outstanding! [Another false alarm for the angels.] This reminds me of a Psalm: "The heavens declare the glory of God…" [Interrupting and very grouchy] Missy, you might as well know that sometimes this job can get boring. Other times it can be really dangerous. Lately, a wolf has been attacking the sheep. You might say it gets kind of wild and wooly…. Everything is going wrong! This census is happening in town; and I hear that folks are coming from all over to register, just because the Emperor says so. The sheep owner is not happy about all the sheep that have been lost and is giving us one week to shape up. It's bad. Why would anyone want to be a shepherd? Now, Oscar, let's not give Missy a bad first impression. By the way, Missy, this is Oscar G. Potter. For Preview Only
