LARGE PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES medium-easy / medium
Rudi's Batuque—Julie Hill. This medium-easy
composition for 9 to 15 performers is a great
introduction to the Brazilian groove. An easy melody
and very repetitive rhythms make this ensemble
rather easy to prepare for a performance. Almost six
minutes in length, this is scored for bells, xylophone,
vibraphone, marimba, djembe, timbale, three tom-
toms, snare drum, drumset, shakers and an optional
bass guitar part. Optional steel and Brazilian drum
parts are also included with additional information
listed in the performance notes.

while the rest of the ensemble adds color around

l Five on Five—Stephen Primatic. Stephen
Primatic's Five on Five is an aggressive mallet
ensemble piece for 5 players on one 5-octave
marimba. Because of the number of players, each
performer must be aware of their space and move
quickly so as not to disrupt the other performers.
This makes for an artful, amusing, and unique
spectacle. The opening section is propelled forward
by constant 16th notes that are passed around the
ensemble. The middle section is comprised of
slower, more reflective musical material with an
ostinato split between the bottom two players and
lyrical, melodic material in the other players. The
third and final section is a return to the unrelenting
16th note material of the opening.

l Hidden Dreams—Matthew Curley. Hidden
Dreams is a marvelously arranged piece for high
school percussion ensemble. It starts with the
mallet instruments creating a reverberation effect
by passing around snippets of 16th notes. The

with cadence-style breaks in the battery. The intro
motif sneaks in here and there and fully reappears
at the end. Very cool!
