Into the Arctic—Brian Balmages. This hauntingly
aggressive work investigates the legends surrounding
the exploration of Antarctica. Inspired by recent
brutal winters involving the polar vortex, the music
depicts magical scenery as well as treacherous
terrain. Eventually, the legends of Antarctica take
center stage as the music becomes restless and
increasingly aggressive. Powerful and exciting!

recording of this popular Irish ballad was #1 on
the music charts of the time. The gentle and lilting

Primal Dances—Brian Balmages.
Primal in every sense, complex harmonies combine with angular
melodies to elicit a visceral and primitive atmosphere. Driven by
percussion and a dissonant rhythmic pulse, the music eventually gives
way to a slower, mystical section. As its primal nature returns in full
force, the work culminates in the punctuated, adrenaline-packed ending.

Across windswept dunes and barren plains, this eerie tale is whispered
to us on the hot breath of the desert. It's a depiction of the ghostly
dances of immortals who are not bound by the confines of their tombs,
but are free to roam among the living. Haunting whispers and chants

Sirocco—Gary D. Ziek.
This sweeping work is named for the Mediterranean wind that
originates in the Sahara Desert. This phenomenon is musically brought
to life, re-creating the changing nature of this arid wind. Beginning
with a brief and violent flurry of sound, it then subsides to the calm
of a still, hot desert morning. As the air starts to move, the desert
comes to life with the music evolving into a 6/8 world-music groove,
enhanced by colorful pulsating percussion effects. Building and
growing in intensity, the raging sandstorm powers over the landscape
to a climactic close.

Tiger: The Shadow Hunter—Randall D. Standridge.
Tigers are among the most majestic and fearsome creatures in the
world - beautiful, graceful, and deadly. This tribute to these wonders
of nature incorporates Asian musical influences from the various
locales where tigers are found. The quiet yet ominous opening hints at
the hidden presence of the tiger as he stalks his prey. Then, abruptly
springing to the attack, the chase is on with the music taking flight.
This breathtaking cat-and-mouse hunt continues until the definitive and
inevitable finish.
