4t How Can I Keep from Singing—Sarah Quartel.
Available in editions for SSAA and for SATBB a
cappella voices, Sarah Quartel's setting of How
Can I Keep From Singing? is a lively reimagining of
the 19th-century hymn. Opening with a solo verse,
the piece proceeds with a soaring soprano melody
supported by the rhythmic vocal accompaniment
of the ATBB voices, with occasional alternation
between 4/4 and 7/8 meter. Together, these
elements capture both the gentle hope and the
profound joy of the text.

4t i carry your heart—Eric Whitacre. This gorgeous
a cappella setting of the E.E. Cummings poem is a
gem for mixed choirs. Sweeping legato lines with
extended cluster cadences and modern harmonies
create the lush soundscape for which Whitacre
is well known. Sliding voice leading creates
movement on the text that grows towards the final
statement "i carry your heart, i carry it in my heart."

4L I Dream a World—Connor J. Koppin. With
Langston Hughes' famous poetry at the forefront, the
composer has created a gorgeous and tender work
that truly brings light to a darkened world. The piece
was composed as a memorial to a family, and the
instrumentation and style were inspired by their lives.
The poem heralds equality, empathy and kindness,
and the emotive setting fits seamlessly with that
theme. The memorable melody and expertly crafted
piano accompaniment and instrumental lines for viola
and cello will stick with your singers, being a lifelong
lesson that will come back to them in difficult times.
Expressive and moving!

t I Should Be Glad—Susan LaBarr. "I should be
glad of loneliness and hours that go on broken
wings..." Based on a poem by Sara Teasdale, I
Should Be Glad captures the gratitude that artists
feel as they live and work each day. Melody is
of the utmost importance as this beautifully
textured a cappella work climbs from simple two-
part singing to eight-part singing at its climax.
Highly recommended!

Warmly expressive and hopeful, it continues to
appear on concert and festival programs since its
premiere in 1993.

and compelling text join forces in this exciting

way for your choir to take on the Jabberwock
than this rollicking dance in c-minor with rhythmic
melodies, dynamic contrasts and a "galumphing"
piano accompaniment? Sensible vocal layering
make this easy to learn, and the ending bursts
with shouts of "Calooh, Callay!" It's an exceptional
concert or festival choice!

lines and a sensitive text shine in this powerful,
heartfelt recollection of a lost loved one. Perfectly
capturing the essence of love that lives forever, it
is at the same time both touching and haunting.

lt John Anderson—Tim Winebrenner. With a text
from 18th-century Scottish poet Robert Burns, this
a cappella original is like a folk song - an upbeat
choice for your treble ensemble. A hint of Scottish
brogue, an exciting rhythmic feature, and an
endearing tone make this a top choice for concert
or festival.

Let the Music Fill Your Soul—Jacob Narverud.
Robert Bode's text infuses this original song with
a message of music advocacy and appreciation.
The rhythmic piano accompaniment sets up a nice
groove in the compound meter for the choral parts
to stretch against with duples and triples. This is a
special piece that will be a great signature song for
your choir, or can be used as a dramatic way to
open or close your concert. Wonderful!

The Light Dawns on a Weary World—Mack
Wilberg. This short, energetic piece sets words
by contemporary hymn writer Mary Louise
Bringle. The text is full of hope; Wilberg's use of
a 7/8 time signature keeps the verses propelling
forward joyously while undulating notes shape the
refrains. Several key changes are supported by a
continuously rhythmic accompaniment in the form
of piano duet or large orchestra.

H The Lobster Quadrille—David Eddleman. Here is a
whimsical interpretation of a Lewis Carroll poem from
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Excellent diction is
essential in telling this fantastical story, in which Alice
meets the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon, who teach
her to dance. A playful piano accompaniment and
clever vocal writing make this a lively, fun program
feature for any performance occasion!

Lorelei—Clara Schumann/arr. Brandon
Williams. An authentic and representative lied
from a Romantic-era female composer set in
a dynamic arrangement for women's or treble
choirs. Clara Schumann's dramatic setting of the
poem Lorelei was a birthday gift to her husband
Robert in 1843. Her mastery of the keyboard
is evident in this exciting and descriptive
accompaniment that features driving eighth-note
figures reminiscent of Schubert's Erlkoenig. A
translation and pronunciation guide is included
for the German text.

lL Love Arrives—Tom Trenney. Maya Angelou's
poem Touched by an Angel is elegantly represented
by the treatment of the text by the voice and the
expressiveness of the piano accompaniment.
The vocal writing successfully tracks the varied
emotions - sometimes rhythmic, sometimes gentle
- generated by the text. Mostly in three-part with
some excursions into two-part writing.

4L Lucky Luke—Morten Vinther. From the Swedish
t a cappella supergroup, The Real Group, this
tender song talks of the advice an adult might
give a child about life. Wrapped in a folky setting,
with improvised vocal percussion and rhythmic
accompanying parts that surround the baritone
melody, the uncomplicated texture lets the text
shine though. Simply put, this is a wonderful
piece for a cappella or concert choirs with just
the right amount of contemporary feel and a
positive message.

H Lullaby—Daniel Elder. This contemporary concert/

deep, cloudless blue, and the treetops are gleaming
with a fresh morning dew..." Appropriate for any

L A Lullaby—Ryan Murphy. The poetry of Eugene
Field is captured beautifully in this original work.
The words of the lullaby speak both to a child
falling asleep and to a child who "does not hear
his mother's song." The lilting triple meter and the
movement of the piano accompaniment imitate
rocking. Add the optional strings for a lush effect.
"And as I sing, my sweet, to you, oh, would the
lullaby I sing - the same sweet lullaby he knew
while slumbering on this bosom too - were borne
to him on angel's wing! So hushaby - O hushaby."
