Ht Lux Aurumque—Eric Whitacre. Upon
reading Edward Esch's poem Light and Gold,
composer Eric Whitacre was immediately
struck by its genuine, elegant simplicity. He
asked the celebrated American poet Charles
Anthony Silvestri to translate it into Latin for
this seminal work for mixed choir a cappella. A
simple approach was essential to the success
of the work, and Whitacre waited patiently
for the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow,
weaving a rich choral tapestry of light and the
soft singing of angels for the newborn child.
A Christmas text, but the effect is timeless.

moving work which treats this profound text as a
metaphor for life. "Fall on me like a silent dew, or
like those maiden showers, which, by the peep of
day, do strew a baptism o'er the flowers..."

All My Trials—arr. Gwyneth Walker. A very
poignant song. Phrases such as "Hush little baby,
don't you cry, you know your mama was born to
die," or "Oh my brothers, I must leave you here
behind," view the approach of death in terms of
those left behind. The accompaniment of repeated
eighth-note chords is marked as if trembling or
sobbing. Although the harmonic language is tonal
and consonant almost entirely throughout the song,
a few dissonances appear near the end, reflecting
the pain of parting.
